Range De Plugging Session - 3rd December 2015

On Thursday 3rd December a number of volunteers helped our professional team Un-plug golf balls on the driving range. As the majority of this year's winter weather has been wet, it was becoming very difficult to collect balls on poor ground conditions!

Thank you to Mike Magrath, Dave Hayward, Sue Hockey, Bernard Glover, Kathy Lane, John Slade and Chris Strickland who helped on the range, without your help it would have been very hard to collect!

Coaching Tip

When it comes to working on your golf game it's very easy to rush onto the range, however roughly half your shots on the course are based on the putting green!

Next time you play have a look on the putting green… How many people do you see practicing their putting?

Not everybody likes to practice and it's understandable this time of year it can become very cold and practice seems a lot more like hard work. However you can make your practice more enjoyable with a few simple drills that will help improve your stroke and enjoy your putting.

Drill 1 - Check your eye line over the ball

It's very important you position your eyes over the ball correctly. If you lose the correct position it can be very difficult to make a consistent putting stroke.

Eyes Behind the Ball - Your arc becomes very strong bringing the putter inside your body.
Eyes too far ahead - Your arc can become steep and your putter works away from you.

How do you check you're in good position?

You can assess your eye position with either a golf ball or an alignment stick.

With the golf ball simply address the ball you are putting and with another ball drop this a couple of inches away from your eyes. When the ball drops you are looking to see the ball land in line with the putter head. If the ball lands in front of the putter or behind the putter you can see that your eyes aren't correctly over the ball.

With an alignment stick simply position this between your eyeline dangling down towards the putter (obviously not too close the eyes avoiding injury!). The end of the alignment stick should be pointing at the putting, preferably in line with the centre spot.

By using these drills your eyeline will improve and it will be a lot easier to perform a straighter putting stroke!

A straighter stroke means more putts holed!

Drill 2 - Making Contact with the sweet spot!

Do you ever wonder why you leave some putts shorts?
Or do you regularly miss putts Left or Right?

If you struggle with putting it can sometimes be a result of missing the sweet spot on your putter. When you make contact with the Heel or Toe of the putter the ball will not roll as quickly as it would hitting the sweet spot. As a result you leave putts short and in addition you can also miss left and right as the putter is likely to twist at impact.

What can help?

A simple drill you can use is by simply sticking something on your putter face either side of your sweet spot. You can use anything which will cushion the impact if you make contact with the Heel or Toe, for example Blue Tac, Velcro strips, rolls of tape etc. Allow for a balls width and make sure it's not too easy!

If you make contact outside the sweet spot the ball will not roll properly.

You might experience a lot of putts racing by quickly, however this is because you are making contact with the sweet spot and as a result the ball is rolling better and efficiently! From here you will need to practice and get used to the pace!
