Firstly I would to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year and best wishes for 2016.

I enjoyed a superb 2015 after taking on the opportunity of transforming Wells Professional Shop and was pleased to see the Golf Club moving forward. A huge thank you to all Wells Golf Club members and visitors that have supported me throughout last year and I look forward to see what 2016 holds.

Lundy Island

On Wednesday 30th December, Wells Golf Club held their annual 'Lundy Island' 4BBB competition. This being for charity, some 60 hardy souls turned out and optimistically commenced play, in dry-ish, if rather breezy conditions. However, the weather deteriorated rapidly, both overhead and underfoot and so, accepting discretion to be the better part of valour, competitors finished early and headed for the welcome warmth and cheer of the Clubhouse.

All the prize monies, raffle money and the various fines were presented to Club Captain, Erica Klim, towards the Club's charity for this year - 'Heads Up' - a local support group.

The only prize awarded on the day was to Mike Bailey for the after match 'Odd/Funny Footwear' competition, for sporting a pair of Xmas and Golf themed Wellies.....but he's harmless really.'

What would you like to achieve in 2016?

What's your New Year's Golfing resolution?

Personal goals are great to set and having a golfing new year's resolution will help you create a pathway to success.

Whatever you are trying to achieve this year, our professional team are here to guide & help you, everyone should have a target they want to achieve:

- Spending more time on the driving range and less time on the course
- You might want to lower your handicap by a certain amount, do you have a number in mind?
- Work harder on improving your swing so you can save valuable shots
- Understand how to play a number of different shots e.g. Fade, Draw, Low or High
- Keeping track of statistics and analysing your own game more

All these elements are worth considering and setting short and long term goals are great for measuring your improvement. In the professional shop our coaches offer a great coaching services, both myself and Thomas Maggs have taught golfers from a variety of different ages starting at the age of 4 all the way to 85 years and above. No matter what your age or ability you should always set goals!

We offer a wide selection of coaching packages and use the latest software to help analyse your golf game such as Flightscope Launch Monitor, iPads, High Resolution cameras and much more.

This month we are offering a FREE 15 Minute Consultation session to help develop your golf game further.

Why not book a lesson today and we can help you set goals and achieve them in 2016.

Has your Golf gone a bit FAT this Christmas?

This time of year a lot of golfers struggle with their iron play due to wetter ground conditions, as a result golfers start hitting the ball heavy/catching the ground before the ball causing a fat shot. One of the key things that causes this is due to the swing becoming too shallow.

When the swing path is too shallow the club reaches its low point before the ball, causing turf contact then ball contact. In the summer you may be able to get away with this because the ground is a lot firmer offering a higher level of forgiveness as the club can skip/ bounce on the turf rather than digging into the ground.

One of the main reasons we see this is because many amateurs struggle with their weight transfer, rather than shift their weight towards the target on the way down, they keep it on their back foot and then swing from there. To ensure you get solid contact it is important that you shift your weight towards the target, to create a descending blow rather than an ascending blow.

A good drill to help you gauge the feeling of shifting your weight target side is as followed:

Place a ball 3 - 6 inches further forward in you stance than normal, from here you will have to move your weight towards the target to hit the ball. Then after a set of 12 balls move the ball back to your normal playing position and hit twelve with that same feeling of shifting your weight towards the target.

A Simple fix but very effective!
