Tweedale Medal and Pro-Am Qualifier

This month's Tweedale Medal and Pro-Am Qualifier were played in relatively generous conditions and again there was a fantastic entry of 88 players. The white tees and slightly longer course didn't have a major effect on the scoring as there was some excellent scores posted from a large field of members. Full results are as follows:

Division One - First place - David Hayward - 66 nett (£25.15), second place - Alan Todd - 68 nett (£12.57) and in third place - Stuart Austwick - 71 nett (£6.28).

Division Two - First place - Phillip Spring - 70 nett (£44.56), second place - Bill McCollum - 74 nett, back 9 (£22.29) and in third place - Mike Mckay - 74 nett (£11.15).

Division Three - First place - David Cunningham - 73 nett (£30.85), second place - Paul Hembury - 74 nett (£15.42) and in third place - Neil Blake - 76 nett (£7.73).

Well done to all players who received a two spot winning £16 per two spot. Also well done to Mark Western who had two of them! All monies will be on the accounts in the professional shop.

David Gibbon and Bob Lench win the Foursomes Winter Cup

After a long winded winter spell Bob Lench and David Gibbon battled out their final foursomes cup game against Bill McCollum and Bill Ocallaghan. After a nervy start by both teams the 'Bills' move into a two hole lead. Once Lench and Gibbon settled they won seven out of eight holes and the match was won on the the 13th. It was not as easy a victory as it sounds as both Bills put up a worthy fight.

Surely Lench and Gibbon must be the most unlikely outsiders to win this Winter Cup, the Leicester City of Wells Seniors! Bob Lench and David Gibbon not only sealed a six and five win over their playing partners in the final but also sealed the same impressive six and five win in both the semi and quarter-finals.

Well done to the winning pair!

iPINGCustom fitting for putters with our new iPING Fitting System

The iPING app analyses and displays your consistency on a screen using three main factors:

  • Stroke type - Determined by how much the putter face rotates during the forward stroke.
  • Impact angle - The putter's face angle at impact, relative to address.
  • Tempo - A measure of the duration of the backswing relative to the forward swing.

The app works by computing consistency over a series of five putts where your stroke type, impact angle and tempo are measured, displayed and stored for every putt in that session. The iPING Fit feature matches you with the PING putter models that fits your stroke type. Matching your putter to your stroke type is the key to greater consistency and lower scores.

How does it work?

The first step is to hit a series of five putts. After the session, the app displays a shaft label color-coded by stroke type: blue for straight strokes, green for slight arcs, and red for strong arcs. Once you know your stroke type and corresponding shaft label, tapping the "Recommend Putter" tab brings up a list of every current PING putter model that matches your stroke type. You simply scroll through the list to find the models that appeal to you. If you would like to be custom fitted to a PING putter using this service then please contact our professional shop on 01749 679059 or click here to get in touch.

Professional Coaching Tip

Do you have a pre-shot routine? Do you know it? So many golfers have a pre-shot routine for most golf shots but don't even know what their routine is when asked in a lesson.

We don't want to be the golfer who makes a swing, when it finally feels right. Unfortunately, without a good pre-shot routine it may never feel right, opening the door for tension and anxiety to creep into our game.

Finding a pre-shot routine that we will understand and rely on when it's time to make the swing will help reassure your mind and build confidence. Understanding your pre-shot routine will really help to keep the tension and anxiety levels way down. Watch the professionals on television and you will see that they all have a solid pre-shot routine.

What simple steps to a routine are good to follow?

  1. Yardage - First it's good to start with the yardage using either a laser range finder or GPS unit. This information has a reflection on the choice on club needed for the shot.
  2. Club Selection - Once a club selection is made, we then check the wind to help us judge what type of shot to play.
  3. Target - Looking down the line we pick a target to aim at which will be our main focus when playing the shot. Note - You should always pick a very small target to help narrow your focus.
  4. Visualise and practice swings - Make a few practice swings similar to your intended swing you are trying to create. Create a positive image in your head of how you want the ball to start, curve in the air and land.
  5. Relax and play the shot - These points are only guidelines for how you should carry out a routine. Every player is different so therefore some of the points will be carried out in a different order.

If you would like some help on creating a solid pre-shot routine then you can with the assistance of our PGA Professionals here at Wells Golf Club. Simply contact our professional shop on 01749 679059 for more information on lessons or click here to send us an email.

Greenkeepers news

So why do we aerate our greens?

There are lots of variants of aeration and one of the most effective is coring out, which involves taking a two to four inch core from the green. This in turn reduces thatch build up which then allows air, water and vital nutrients to penetrate grass roots allowing them to grow deeper into the soil profile and producing a stronger more vigorous golf green. We must remember that roots don't grow in soil they grow in the air space found and provided by aeration. The main reason this particular programme takes place is to alleviate greens compaction and with the winter we have had it was decided the greens would need this treatment. Remember that grass wants to grow, but like us it needs air and water.

This week our course maintenance has been scheduled and the whole process takes around three - four days to complete. Even though it seems the greens are in poor condition, this procedure has to take part so our greens avoid disease in the future.
