Fitting centre news

Why is re-gripping beneficial?

Re-gripping is normally used to replace the stock grips found on clubs which are the wrong size or a grip which has purely seen better days. It's good to choose a grip that best matches the size of your hands. When considering this it's good to select a material, texture, design and colour that's best suited to your style, playing level, and weather conditions. However, one of the most popular and main reasons we change the grips, are to replace worn-out, slick grips that contribute to excessive grip tension and pressure.

In theory grips should be replaced every 40 rounds or every 30 rounds if you're spending a considerable amount of time at the practice range. Regardless of rounds played, a grip should always be replaced at the first sign of noticeable wear such as hard surfaces, shinny patches, cracks, wear spots and complete loss of tack.

Improperly sized grips and grips that aren't suited for certain weather conditions will negatively impact your game and cost you strokes. Comfort, consistency, shot dispersion and shot distance can all be improved with new golf grips.

In the professional shop we offer a wide variety of size, material and style options to suit the needs of all golfers. There is no fitting costs for the grips and grips start from £6.95. Click here to get in touch for more details.

Tip of the week

How do you practice on the driving range? Is your time well spent? How long does it take you to hit 50 balls?

When you find the time to work on your game and get down to the driving range, it's important to ensure that you're using your time effectively. It's not all about getting out the driver and hitting it as hard as you can, it's about improving your game. Ask yourself the three questions above and analyse your own practice routine.

If you think you have a problem when working on your swing, then it's wise to seek advice from our professional team or even an experienced player and ask them how they work on their swing. The aim of hitting balls on the range is to help produce a more consistent golf swing, therefore practicing the wrong things is wasting your time.

When you consider how many times you use your driver during your average round (probably between 14-16 shots depending on the course) it doesn't make sense to spend all your time on the range hitting drivers. The majority of your shots will come from using wedges and irons, so it's important to work on these aspects of your game.

What practice structure could work for me?

  1. First and foremost, it's imperative that you warm-up properly. A lot of people use the range to warm-up, however it's important to warm-up before you hit balls. Warming up thoroughly will not only help prevent injury, but it will also make your first few swings more effective than without warming up.
  2. Pick some targets, these can be far in the distance to create an imaginative fairway or green.
  3. To ease your body into your practice session, we would suggest starting with a wedge or a short iron. Depending on how many balls you're hitting, make sure you have an idea of how many balls you need for each club. Let's base this around 50 balls.
  4. Select five balls to hit and start with your wedge, after you've completed this set select another five balls and move up along to your shortest iron. You can use this technique and progress through your clubs until you are thoroughly warmed up and ready to finish with your long irons, woods and drivers. This method dosen't have to be with every club in your bag or it might take some time, however just using either odd or even clubs will do.
  5. In turn this will help hone your practice sessions, as you will know what parts of your game you need to devote more time to.
  6. If you're looking to lower your score in the most effective way, it will be economical to devote most of your time to your short game. Pitching can be worked on the driving range and you can dedicate 60% of the balls to work on your short game and approach to the green, leaving the remaining balls to help develop your long fairway shots and drives.

These tips will help you think more productively about using your time on the driving range for real practice, and not just think about trying to hit the ball hard and far.
