Wells Stragglers

Wells Stragglers played away at Saltford on Sunday in dry and warm weather with the course in great condition. The results are as followed for all five matches:

  • Mike McKay and John Baker - Lost 6 - 4

So at half time Saltford are two points in the lead and will play Wells in the return match at home on Thursday, 26 June. The Saltford Captain on the 17th hole which is a 157 yard par 3, bounced the ball 10 inches from the pin and it dropped straight into the hole. Traditional congratulations and Scotch Whiskey was the order of the day.

Wells Seniors vs. Knowle (Away)

The Wells senior men lost 3 - 4 in an exciting away game at Knowle. The final group lost on the 18th with the last putt. Mike Shave recorded a birdie, nett eagle on the difficult 14th hole when his third shot, played from a long way out, went in.

Wells Avalon Team

The Avalon team succumbed to their first defeat in the league this season. Ian Burr and Mark Western won and Mike Metcalfe with Glen Crocker halved bringing in 1½ points. Here are the overall match scores:

  • Simon Jackson and Pete Walker had a rare loss 3 and 2
  • Mike Metcalfe and Glen Crocker managed a halve
  • Andy Williams and Bob Lench lost 4 and 2
  • Jason Huck and Pascal Norman lost 4 and 2
  • Ian Burr and Mark Western won 3 and 2

Best of luck to the team when they play away at Tall Pines on Sunday, 5 June.

Wells Ladies Alliance vs. Lansdown (Home)

The Ladies Alliance team played well against Lansdown and scooped 12 points from the match.

The Mixed Open was enjoyed by a large field of visitors from as far apart as Lutterworth and Lyme Regis. The winning home team were Ian Burr, Simon Lord, and Kim Lord with Hollie Lloyd supporting. The winning visitors came from Wareham and enjoyed the variety of the course aided by some lovely weather. Wells again look forward to hosting the event next year.

Winners of the Winter Foursomes were David Gibbon and Bob Lench who beat Bill O'Callaghan and Bill McCollum 6 and 5. In the Plate competition, Richard Sheard and Andy Williams defeated Colin Payne and John Blench by 5 and 4.

Range news

Driving balls at Wells Golf Club

After purchasing 5,000 brand new range balls there has been some great feedback and now golfers can experience a better quality practice. The new range balls are two-piece golf balls which have been tested and compared against other leading brands. Due to the contunious rain and inconsistent whether the ground conditions have made it difficult to maintain the ball level. Therefore to keep our ball level stable, I have purchased another 3,000 golf balls. The balls will be excatly the same, however the outer layer writing will be red which is the 2016 ball model.

May I remind all members and visitors that hitting your own golf balls on the driving range will no longer be allowed as we want to keep the golf balls to a similar standard. Lessons and custom fittings will now be using the new range balls and therefore we would like to keep the balls consistent and provide you with a better quality practice.

Gapping sessions

Know your yardages

It is good to have a set of clubs fitted for you and when you're hitting the ball consistent it's also good to know your yardages. A yardage session includes 45 minutes using the FlightScope X2 Elite, to allow you to find your individual yardage for each club. This information is vital to shoot lower scores and will also give you additional knowledge when playing another golf course. The main objective of the session is to gain an idea of how far each club in your golf bag travels on the carry giving an average yardage for each club, I will also put these average yardages onto a A6 laminated sheet which can easily fit on the outside of your golf bag so you never take the wrong club again!
