Competition news

Pro's Day - Saturday, 18 June

Firstly I'd like to thank all the competitors who played in my Pro's Day event on Saturday, without everyone's support the event wouldn't happen and I'm glad everyone enjoyed it. With a very impressive entry last year, I was pleased to see many of last year's faces competing again this year. As the entries last year filled up, the tee times had been extended to allow for extra space. The weather was pleasant and calm this year compared to last year's last minute thunder and lightning, therefore everyone made it home dry. However, after the heavy rain on Friday, the golf course was playing long which had an impact on scoring. Many fine scores were still returned and judging by how close most of the nearest the pin in regulation shots were on each hole, everyone seemed to be playing well. The standard of golf was very impressive with 17 groups posting scores of 40 points and above.

Callaway Golf helped to support this year's prize table with some fantastic prizes up for grabs worth as much as £289. The prize table, worth over £1,500, stretched to fifth place, two groups had scored an impressive 44 points and four groups with 43 points and therefore a very tight countback was needed to decide the winners.

Congratulations to Wells juniors Thomas Roberts and Edward Higgs (scoring 44 points) who were the winners of the Pro's Day 2016 winning on countback over the last six holes. Thomas and Edward took home a Callaway XR driver 2016 each worth £289. Closely followed by:

  • Second place - Dave Hayward and Geoff Ead (44 points) - Winning a Callaway HyperLite S stand bag each.
  • Third place - Pete Ramsay and Alan Todd (43 points, countback) - Winning an Odyssey Works #7 putter each.
  • Fourth place - Martyn Pugh and Warren Hamilton (43 points, countback) - Winning a Callaway MacDaddy PM Grind wedge each.
  • Fifth place - Simon Jackson and Pete Walker (43 points, countback) - Winning a Callaway HyperLite 2 stand bag each.

In addition to the prize table there was also a nearest the pin prize on every hole. This was to give each player more of an incentive and something to look forward to each hole. Below is the hole, prize and player who was closest:

  • First hole - Logo'd TriFold towel - Lee Matthews.
  • Second hole - ASBRI Valuables Pouch - Charlie Lewis.
  • Third hole - FootJoy ProDry Crew socks - Mark Wintersgill.
  • Fourth hole - Under Armour socks (three pack) - Matt Parham.
  • Fifth hole - AutoFix XL pitch fork - Phil Leonard.
  • Sixth hole - Callaway Cotton Tri Fold towel - Mike Metcalfe.
  • Seventh hole - Glenmuir socks gift set - Jill Bocquet.
  • Eighth hole - TaylorMade Cart towel - Mike Metcalfe.
  • Ninth hole - TaylorMade Tour cap - Andy Marshall
  • 10th hole - Under Armour Headline cap - Trevor Padfield*.
  • 11th hole - Callaway Big Bertha cap - Alan Todd.
  • 12th hole - Bells Whiskey - George Morgan.
  • 13th hole - Deluxe leather card holder - Phil Slater.
  • 14th hole - Deluxe leather card holder - Simon Jackson.
  • 15th hole - Callaway Tri Fold towel - Matt Parham.
  • 16th hole - Pom Pom driver headcover - Dave Hayward.
  • 17th hole - Callaway Tour Cap - Jill Bocquet.
  • 18th hole - Callaway visor - Martyn Pugh.

All players who had a "two spot" on the day receive a dozen Callaway Supersoft golf balls. All the prizes are non-exchangeable as they have been carefully selected and sent to us as a bulk. All prizes are in the professional shop so please collect as soon as possible.

After lasts year's support towards the raffle it was decided to hold another one this year with a fantastic Odyssey Staff bag worth £299 up for grabs. As the raffle tickets were supported well I decided to add a few more items to the raffle including a TaylorMade duffel bag for second place and a dozen Callaway Supersoft golf balls for third place. Phil White was the lucky winner taking home the Odyssey bag, second place - Mark Baggelaar and third place - Phillip Slater.

Personally I would like thank all the competitors who supported the event as without them it wouldn't have been possible to run. A big thanks to family, friends and professional staff for all their hard work helping throughout the day and organising prior to the event. Another big thanks to the catering staff in the clubhouse and not forgetting James and his greensftaff as the course was presented brilliantly like it has been all year, showing a great amount of hard work. Thank you again for the support and I'm already looking forward to 2017's event.

Advice from the team

Nothing to lose but so much to gain...

Unless you've been under a rock somewhere, you will know that we are currently running a promotion on selected hardware in-store.

We really have got off to a flying start with several of you opting for a FREE fitting and FREE lesson with recent club purchases, rather than simply buying straight off the shelves. We can't stress enough how important it is that you don't do this, and there really is no excuse anymore with the services we offer in the shop.

Many people think that custom fitting will only benefit top-level players, when in-fact it will arguably have more of an impact for the ordinary club golfer

There really is no such thing as a 'standard club' anymore, as each person requires something slightly different - albeit extra length, a different lie or a stronger/weaker shaft. The FREE fitting element of this promotion will ensure that your new clubs are matched/suited to your game and swing, enabling you get the most out of the equipment. Follow this up with a FREE after-sales lesson and you will be striping the ball better than ever.

We know this sounds good, almost too good to be true, but you don't have long to take advantage of this offer - it ends on the 3rd July. So make sure you give yourself the best chance to play better golf in 2016 by treating yourself to some new clubs.

If you don't, who will?
