Avalon Men's Team - Wells vs. Stockwood Vale - Sunday, 3 July
Sunday, 3 July presented both teams with excellent weather, with the sun out and the course in top condition. Wells knew they were going to be facing a challenging side with some tough handicaps and previous results against the same team at Stockwood. With regulars unavailable Wells provided a strong team.
First out were the strong unbeaten pairing of Mike Metcalfe and Malcolm Terry who struggled to cope with the number of shots they had to give, but played a tight match losing on the last one down. Baden Wilkinson and Mark Baggelaar lost 2&1 with Baden having five birdies and the last two pairings of Jason Huck and Bob Lench and Mark Western and Ian Burr both dovetailing well and coming in with 5&4 and 5&3 wins. That left Phil Spring and Mike Magrath to determine the result. This was not looking promising on the 17th with the pair two down, however after winning the 17th they managed to win the 18th, halving their match and the game.
Avalon Men's Team - Wells vs. Cricket St Thomas - Saturday, 9 July
After last week's disappointing home draw, the Avalon team were back to winning ways winning 3-2. Most the matches had an impressive margin between them with some matches finishing early on the course, results were as follows:
Simon Jackson and Pete Walker lost 6&4
Mike Metcalfe and Malcolm Terry won 6&5
Andy Williams and Seniors' Club Champion Glen Crocker won 5&4
Jason Huck and Bob Lench lost 2&1
Ian Burr and Phil Spring won 5&4
Wells Bristol and District Team vs. Henbury
Wells GC played Henbury GC in the Bristol and District League recently. The away match was played in windy conditions with occasional summery rain showers. The course, which is very similar to Wells in length and narrowness with lots of trees, was in excellent condition. Richard Connock and Pete Stock kicked off with a narrow one up win. The result was repeated by birthday boy Baden Wilkinson and partner Charlie Lewis. Sam Todd and Rob Payne staged a magnificent fightback from four down to take a half. Playing together for the first time Alan Todd and Nick Wilson gelled and achieved the infamous dog licence. A 7&6 win for those younger readers! 2015 and 2016 Seniors` Club Champions Mike Metcalfe and Glen Crocker combined to provide their usual fare and won 3&2. Thus Wells won, for the first time this season, a resounding victory particularly satisfying playing away, by 4.5 to 0.5 and moved off the foot of the league table. Perhaps this will be the turning point in their year.
Seniors' Club Championships
The 2016 Seniors' Championship was played over 36 holes on Monday, 4 July and Thursday, 7 July. Monday saw almost perfect conditions with warm weather, dryness and little wind for the players. Considering the conditions, the scoring was surprisingly high amongst the field of more than 50 competitors. At the end of the first day three players had broken away from the field in the gross competition. Martin Barnes, scoring 78, trailed Mark Western and Glen Crocker who both shot 76. The nett competition was much more open with around 20 players in real contention for day two.
Day two was also dry and warm, but with a little wind to make things more interesting for chasers and leaders alike, some of the pre-tournament favourites made good starts to the second day in an effort to catch the final group. Dave Hayward turned in level par and had closed the gap, but was unable to maintain the charge on the back nine. John Baillie, defending champion Mike Metcalfe and Dave Hayward all improved on their first round scores but were unable to post a 36 hole target for the three leaders. Mark Western held an overall one shot lead at the end of nine holes with Barnes and Crocker just one and two shots away respectively. The back nine saw many changes of leader and no one was able to keep a lead, however tenuous, for long. By the 18th hole Martin Barnes and Glen Crocker had a slim lead over Mark Western and a play-off looked possible. Barnes found tree trouble twice and recorded a six, Western had a five and Crocker made an exquisite chip from the front of the green and left himself a two foot putt for a four which he duly converted. Therefore, much to many people`s surprise, the final gross scores were Mark Western 161 (76+85), Martin Barnes 159 (78+81) and the winner of the Cole Cup for 2016 was Glen Crocker with 157 (76+81).
As predicted the quest for the nett prize was closely contested, Brian Cowley brightened up his day with a hole-in-one. Malcolm Terry put together two excellent and consistent nett scores of 71 and 72 (143) to beat Stephen Payne (68+75) on countback and to take third prize. John Mackness had a magnificent second day to record 140 (73+67)and take second prize. This left day one leader Colin Webber requiring a decent second day performance which he duly delivered to be the 2016 winner of the Dalby nett cup with his score of 139 (67+72).
A big thanks to the green staff for the presentation and condition of the course and also to the catering staff for the food and refreshments throughout the two days.

Callaway Great Big Bertha Drivers Now Only £279
The Callaway Great Big Bertha drivers have just seen a price drop from £349 to £279. This means that one of Callaway's most adjustable drivers yet just became one of their most affordable. The Big Bertha features adjustability in both the hosel and sole. You can adjust the loft +/- 1.5 degrees. The driver features a sliding weight on the sole so you can adjust draw or fade bias.
The driver features a multi-material construction meaning that Callaway have been able to save weight in the head whilst also making it one of their most aerodynamic shapes yet, meaning faster club hear speed. In turn this means faster balls speeds resulting in more distance on both the centre and off centre strikes.
