Competition news

Tucknott Trophy
Phil
On Saturday, 27 August the popular Tucknott Trophy competition got underway with 45 pairs taking part in the 4BBB format. After a mixed week of weather delivering rain and sun, the course has had ideal conditions for growth and the Green Staff kept the course in excellent condition. There was some excellent scores posted with 30 scores of 40 points and above. The full results are as follows:

First place - Geoff Knight and Rob Chalker - 48 points - £54 each, second place - Simon Jones and Trevor Jones - 47 points - £27 each and in third place - Richard Gould and Bill Marcham - 47 Points (Countback) - £13.50 each.

All teams who made a two on the day received £10 each and all competition monies are on accounts. We also organised a Bonus Ball Raffle in the professional shop for all competitors. The winner of the raffle was Phil Slater picking up £73 worth of golf balls.

Cyder CupCyder Cup 2016

The Cyder Cup is a joint fourball betterball event held at Wells and Farrington and the overall winners of the two-day competition were father and son Alan and Sam Todd, from Wells, with 85 points. Over 240 golfers took part, enjoying the two different courses in superb weather. Peter and Diane Ramsay were first home pair with 82 points followed closely by Mark Wintersgill and Ian Burr on 81 points. Winners of Nearest the Pins included Polly Williams, Peter Ramsay, Jill Bocquet (twice) and Alan Todd. Two spot winners included Alan Todd with three, Peter Ramsay, Jill Bocquet with two and Barry Keys.

Wells Avalon Team vs. Tall Pines

The Avalon team played their last game of the season versus Tall Pines. The match was in the balance at 2-2 with the last game coming up the 18th one down. Ian Burr hit an excellent second shot into the 18th green pin high followed by as good a shot by the opposition. The match ended as a hard fought half. The winning pairs were Simon Jackson and Andy Williams, Aidan Guy and Richard Sheard.

Wells Bristol & District League Match vs. Tracey Park

Wells GC went into their final Bristol & District League match knowing that a win or a half would gain them promotion. They entertained Tracy Park GC who had given them a sound beating at the beginning of the season, but were struggling laterly. Rich Connock and Simon Jackson lost the first match 2&1.Will Thompson and Rob Payne couldn`t find their usual winning ways and went down 3&2. Baden Wilkinson and Sam Todd struggled and lost 4&2. Nick Wilson and Pascal Norman had a tough time going four down at one stage, but fought back to be all square on the 17th. Unfortunately, they lost both of the last two holes to submit two down. Glen Crocker and Alan Todd were seven up at the turn and eased to a hollow 6&4 victory. Wells have had an incredible topsy turvy season which nearly ended with the early threat of relegation. Thankfully the team comfortably avoided this through a mid/late season unbeaten run, but failed at the final hurdle with a defeat which meant no promotion.

August Seniors' Medal

The August Men's Medal was won by Stephen Payne with an excellent nett 68. Bill McCollom came in with nett 72 to take second place and David Szymanski shot nett 73 to take third spot.

Wells' Seniors

Wells' Seniors played at Chipping Sodbury and lost 2.5 to 4.5. There was a comfortable win for Dave Hayward and George West. Ken Ford and Andrew Boatswain won on the last green and Glyn Hallett and David Greenwood got a well-deserved half. Next they visited Mendip where Nick Carter and Chris Strickland did well to manage a half. Dave Hayward and Ken Ford and Graham Bingham and Geoff Ead won though the match was lost 3.5 to 2.5.

Ladies Captains DayLadies Captain's Day

Ladies Captain's Day proved to be wet, very wet, with the competition abandoned after a few holes and will be re-scheduled. The best dressed hat however was won by Tina Davies.
