On the Course...
The Wells Junior Golf Team were this year's winners of the Somerset Development League, played against Junior Golf sides from across the county. They've had a fantastic year, under Junior Captain Tom Roberts, coming second (by just one point) in the Somerset Golf Junior Jamboree and reaching the semi-finals of the Somerset Junior Golf Knockout Cup.
Wells Stragglers played their last two fixtures of the year against Dawlish Warren and Minehead. The first game was away on a challenging course in beautiful sunshine. However it seems the challenge was too great as all pairings lost. Two drives were memorable with one shanked into the bushes, before returning to the course a distance of 6ft 2ins. Not to be outdone, another member wound himself up for one of his momentous drives and missed the ball with the slipstream carrying the ball 3ft 6in. So, over the two legs, Dawlish won 8 - 2.
Their last home match of the season was against Minehead whose team consisted of 10 of their players on handicaps of 14 or below. Wells won 5.5 - 0.5. Partnerships of Gary Leigh and Pete Michell, Terry Searle and Ken Ford, Terry Pearce and Steve Porter, Mike McKay and Philip Kenworthy, Grant Rogers and Adam Holliday all won with Jon Mackness and Craig McConnell earning an extremely good half. Minehead's defence was "We only have three trees on our course, and one of those is about to be taken down." £24 was raised for "Heads Up".
Unfortunately, Weston-Super-Mare Seniors were two players short for the match at Wells. After shuffling players and waiting for a lightning storm to pass, the match got underway. Piers Dalby and Peter Leverick, who played very well won their tight match 2&1. Mike Gee and Ken Ford lost on the last. Peter Bartholomew and Dave Hayward, Seniors' Captain, won 2&1 after Hayward birdied 14, 16 and 17. Nick Wilson and Andrew Boatswain won comfortably and Wells won 3 - 2. The next Seniors home match against Long Sutton saw another win, 4.5 to 1.5, with Mike Magrath and John Moxon clinching the match on the last green. Richard Sheard and John Watson salvaged a half, having been three down with four to play.
Last week the Wells Ladies, with two matches remaining, we were lying fourth in Division Three with 22 points (8 points behind the leaders). They travelled to Minehead and against all the odds beat them 5-2. Then came the last match against Wheathill at Wells. Three of the winners at Minehead couldn't play, but Wells pulled out all the stops and easily won 5-2 again. What a magnificent performance by all the ladies who played in the team or who were reserves throughout the season. Those 10 points leapfrogged us to the top of the Division and so we gained promotion as Division Champions.
Know your yardages...
It is good to have a set of clubs fitted for you and when you're hitting the ball consistently, it's also good to know your yardages. A yardage session includes 45 minutes using the FlightScope X2 Elite, to allow you to find your individual yardage for each club. This information is vital to shoot lower scores and will also give you additional knowledge when playing another golf course. The main objective of the session is to gain an idea of how far each club in your golf bag travels. This is measured on the carry distance giving an average yardage for each club. The average yardages will then be put onto an A6 laminated sheet which can easily fit on the outside of your golf bag so you never take the wrong club again. Please see the image below for an example of a Yardage Gapping Chart.
