Competition news

Wells Seniors

Wells Seniors won home matches against both Kingsdown and Clevedon. Good team performances were enhanced by some notable individual efforts from George White, who holed a monster winning putt, Allan Bancroft for a truly audacious chip in and Ian Mills for guiding partner Nick Wilson to victory by parring the last three holes. Geoff Ead, Ron Davey, Peter Bartholomew and Jack Baillie also made significant contributions.

They were also inspired to gain a very creditable win at West Wilts with 3.5 games to 2.5. Hard-working winners were Nick Carter and Tim Harris, Bob Davies and Nick Wilson and Ken Ford and Mike Gee whilst a deserved half rewarded the experienced pair of Piers Dalby and Bill O'Callaghan.

Stragglers

The Stragglers team played at Minehead this week. It was chilly to start, but it warmed up nicely and some good golf was played. The first pairing of Steve Heath and Adam Holiday found the going a bit tough and succumbed to a surprising 5 and 4 defeat. Second out were the reliable Terry Searle and Bernhard Young; a very tight match saw them eventually triumph 1 up.

John Baker and Phil Kenworthy had a tough draw against the new Minehead Club Captain and a big hitting 8 handicapper, resulting in a home win 2 and 1. John Hockey and Bill Levell worked well together and won 2 up. The final pairing of Gary Leigh and Steve Porter battled hard, but finally lost 3 and 2. No shame for the team losing 3 - 2 away on a challenging course.

Ladies Golf

Philippa Gowen and Cath Levell won their B&D Handicap Foursomes match in fine style against Bristol and Clifton away.

The Ladies Coronation Foursomes competition was played in dry conditions. Janice White and Jill Bocquet came first on countback from Sue Hockey and Cath Levell and qualify to go onto the Regional Finals at Bath in August. We wish them luck.

The Ladies Spring Meeting had some high scores this week with the winners, Tina Davies, Hazel Carmichael and Kitty Usher totaling a fine 89 points. Second were Erica Klim, Sue Slade and Jenny Davis and third Sandy Heath, Linda Wright and Pauline Garrett.

Mixed GreensomesEaster Mixed Greensomes

Phyllis Lewison and Bob Davies, winners of the Mixed Easter Greensomes are congratulated by Stuart Mann, Club Captain and Cath Levell, Ladies Vice Captain.

Avalon League

The Avalon team kicked off their season with a 3 - 2 home win. The winning pairs were; Mike Metcalfe and Malcolm Terry came in with a 2&1 win, James Rutt and Jason Huck won 1 up on the last hole and Pascal Norman and John Baker had an excellent 3&1 win.
