Seniors' OpenSeniors' Open 2017

After a long period without rain, the Seniors' Open proved the catalyst for a change and continuous rain was the order of the day! A large field of 160 players, reduced to148 by some withdrawals, competed in a Two Ball Texas Scramble. Despite the conditions, the course held up well and was in immaculate condition. There were some great performances by both home and away teams. Results were as follows:

Overall Winners - Danny Dowell (Cricket St Thomas) and Pete Davis (Mendip). First Low Handicap Visitors - Tony Allsopp and Alan Snow (Tiverton). First Low Handicap Home - Richard Gould (Wells) and Matt Weeks (Chipping Sudbury). First High Handicap Visitors - Pete Lyster and Mark Walton (Enmore). First High Handicap Home - Barry Keys and Tony Baker (Wells). Other winners were (Visitors): Alan Webber and Richard Barton (Long Sutton), Nigel Bailey and Robert Thompson (Thornbury), John Hargraves (Mendip) and Hartley Herd (Yeovil). Home winners were - Glen Crocker and Nick Wilson (Wells), Dave Hayward (Wells) and Kevin Lane (Weston-Super-Mare), Tim Harris and Roger Sarsby (Wells), Steve Clark and Gary Nutt (Wells). The winners of the Arthur Rice Cup for the best pair from Wells were Glen Crocker and Nick Wilson.

Wells Seniors vs. Long Sutton

Wells Seniors played Long Sutton recently in the first round of the Somerset Seniors' Bowl. The match was played at cricket St. Thomas Golf Club where the greens had been recently tined. The subsequent dry weather meant that putting was something of a lottery .Debutantes Jon Mackness and Nick Carter started the match off well with a win on the first extra hole. Andy Williams and Chris Betenson lost 4&2 while Bob Lench and Glyn Hallett let an early lead slip to lose 3&1. More debutantes in the form of Malcolm Terry and Tim Harris won comfortably 3&1 to square the match. This left the result in the hands of the experienced Glen Crocker and Nick Wilson. They never led and were putted out of the match from all round sound golf from their opponents, losing 3&2.Thus WGC lost the match 3-2.

Wells Avalon vs. Filton

Wells GC played Filton GC at home in the return fixture from a few weeks ago recently. The very strong pairing of Tim Harris and Alan Todd had a bad day only halving the first match .Will Thompson and Baden Wilkinson strolled to a 3&2 victory. Rich Connock and Rich Twinney couldn`t shake off the rust quickly enough and lost 3&2.

Pascal Norman and Nick Wilson won 3&2 which once again left the match result in the hands of Mike Metcalfe and Glen Crocker. They failed to overcome a strong Filton pairing who one would expect to see playing in their first team, not their third, in the future. They lost 2&1 despite having chances to halve the match. Wells drew the overall match 2.5 each.

Wells vs. Mendip Springs

A very tight away match was held between Wells and Mendip Springs. After the initial panic for the stand-in Captain when two players were cutting things rather fine, mentioning no names but they are both taxi drivers! Play started, with a slight shift in the order to allow the late arrivals to have their brunch, in glorious sunshine and a breeze that was enough to keep things challenging but playable. Terry Searle and Rory Meek, playing the water course for the first time, came in with a 2Up win. John Baker and Adam Holliday came in with a 1Up victory. Richard Mansfield and John Hockey fought valiantly against the Home Captain who had a par and two birdies in the first four holes, but eventually went down 3&2. Steve Heath and Gary Leigh had a comfortable 6&4 win, which must have been due to Steve's very nice team shirt which he had to go back for (hence the late arrival), although I'm lead to believe that it wasn't his finest front nine! Finally, Grant Rogers and Phil Spring battled back valiantly from being four down, but unfortunately ran out of holes and finally lost by one hole. Having lost both legs of the fixture in 2016, it was a very pleasing 3 - 2 win to Wells and we look forward to the second leg back in Wells in August where all is still to play for.

Seniors' Scratch Knockout vs. Burnham

Wells played Burnham in the Seniors' Scratch Knockout on neutral territory at Wedmore. As always Burnham proved tough opposition in this singles matchplay. Burnham won the match 3-2, Wells had wins from Glen Crocker and Mike Metcalfe. Dave Hayward, Nick Wilson and new recruit Tim Harris were overturned by some excellent golf from their opponents.

Seniors vs. Enmore Park

Wells Seniors travelled to Enmore Park and enjoyed beautiful weather and a course in its usual great condition. There were wins for Steve Rowse and Geoff Ead, Piers Dalby and Ken Ford, Graham Bingham and John Watson and Peter Leverick and Andrew Boatswain. Leverick was in particularly fine form on his old stomping ground! Acting Captain Nick Carter and partner Rick Sheard secured a half to help Wells to a very well earned victory.

Ladies Results

The ladies won their friendly at home against Bath by three games to two with the winning pairs being Barbara Harris and Kitty Usher, Della Luetchford and Tina Davies, Silvia Gibbon and Cath Levell.

The Karen Nicholls Foursomes Trophy was won by Sandy Heath and Cath Levell with a gross 92. Having started in glorious sunshine they still managed to win even after getting drenched on the last three holes. The nett prize went to the Ladies' Captain, Tina Davies and her partner by Kathy Lane with a nett 77.

How Far Did That Shot Go?

7-ironIf you ask most golfers how far they hit their 7-iron, 99% of the time you can expect to hear "150 yards", however this is rarely an accurate estimate of how far they actually hit it. To hit a 7-iron with 150 yards of carry, we would generally need a swing speed of around 85-90mph (depending on certain other factors), now I'm not sure how many of your are swinging your 7-iron at those speeds, but I can be pretty confident in saying not many. When we're talking about distance we hit our irons, we need to think about carry, as that is the most predictable of measurements, total distances will rely on various other factors such as ground condition etc. This week we are running a competition giving you the chance to win a FREE yardage gapping session with PGA Professional James Keitch. All you have to do is guess how far I hit my 7-iron (carry) in this video and then send us an email here with your answer with "James Keitch hit his 7-iron ….." as the subject line.
