Ladies Past Captains
A group of the Ladies Past Captains had a very successful two days at the Somerset Ladies Past Captains Team Event at Meon Valley. Jenny Davis, Sue Wells, Glynis Slater and Hazel Carmichael were lying third overall at the end of the first day, out of 21 teams, with 98 points. They came in with 108 on the second day and were highly delighted to receive the trophy. Sue Wells also succeeded in getting the Silver Division 'nearest the pin' prize.
Packer Cup
The Senior Men's successful Packer Cup was played in superb weather conditions on a course in terrific condition. However, there were only two scores above 40. 11 of the 18 pairs had creditable scores bunched between 37 and 39 points. The winners, with 43 points were Trevor Cook & Paul Hole, followed in 2nd place by Mike Gee & Barry Watkins with 41 points. Wells Seniors narrowly lost a keenly contested match by 4 games to 3 in glorious weather at Isle Of Wedmore. Peter Leverick/John Watson, Geoff Ead/Colin Mantle and Mike Gee/Ken Ford were the winning pairs whilst John Moxon was disappointed to lose on his debut as acting Captain partnering Dave Hayward who had to give a lot of shots in a particularly difficult encounter.
Stragglers News
The Stragglers played at Mendip Springs. Terry Searle & Rory Meek, playing the course for the 1st time, came in with a 2 up win. John Baker & Adam Holliday won 1 up. Richard Mansfield & John Hockey fought valiantly against but lost 3&2. Steve Heath & Gary Leigh had a comfortable 6&4 win. Finally, Grant Rogers & Phil Spring battled but lost on the last hole.
Greenkeepers News
Greenkeepers Spring Update Spring is drawing to an end and the summer is just around the corner, so our hard work should now start showing the benefits.
Overwatering is the cardinal sin of greenkeeping. Cold wet greens start later than cold dry greens and best practice is to water sparingly, little and often, ideally not before the end of April and finishing by September. The key to good greens is aeration, not watering as grass grows best in the spaces between the soil and not within heavy compact wet earth.
Hence our heavy coring (50mm) followed by filling back the greens with sand, was undertaken in March/April. We then followed this with sorrel rolling (25mm spikes on rollers) every 2 weeks. Irrigation was started on the 20 April, together with the use of wetting agents on specific cold spots and the watering rate has increased slowly, as necessary, since.
We have completed fertilizer treatment similar to that applied on the 14th fairways the season before last on the 1, 2, 3, 9, 14 and 15th fairways. Expensive solution but the fairways and greens should now be at their best from mid-June onwards. Subject to weather and ground conditions we may have to look at vert cutting later in July and/or Air 2G2 treatment in September to maintain the greens.
