Competition news

Bristol & District League

Wells vs. Bristol -
Wells travelled to The Bristol Golf Club in the Bristol & District League recently, for the first time for a number of years. The very strong pairing of Alan Todd and Tim Harris won comfortably 4&3. Will Thompson and Baden Wilkinson found it hard going, losing 6&5. Dave Hayward and Rich Connock lost a close match 2&1 while Captain Pascal Norman and partner Nick Wilson salvaged a half. This left Mike Metcalfe and Glen Crocker needing a win to get anything out of the overall match. They lost one down when an errant Bristol second shot which was going 40 yards out of bounds cannoned back into play and allowed an easy up and down. Wells GC lost 3.5 - 1.5.

Wells vs. Knowle - Wells GC hosted Knowle GC in the Bristol & District League on a blustery and difficult day. The greens however were superb and the home players took full advantage. Alan Todd and Baden Wilkinson won 4&3. Will Thompsom and Rob Payne lost narrowly 2&1. Pascal Norman and Nick Wilson demolished their opponents 6&5, but Tim Harris and Glen Crocker lost one down despite fighting back from three down early on. This left the result in the hands of the final pairing of Dave Hayward and Ian Burr, in a very tight match the Knowle player hit his second shot out of bounds on the 18th hole allowing the Wells pair to win one up. Wells GC won the match 3 - 2.

Wells vs. Cricket St. Thomas

With the course in great condition and the weather dry and blustery, the home team performed well coming in winning 3.5 - 1.5. First out was James Church and Alan Elkins who found the going tough with one of their opponents playing well under their handicap losing 5&4. Jason Huck and Glen Crocker played a tight game with only two in it, but found themselves one down going up 18. Glen managed to get onto the green in two and made four meaning the game ending in a friendly half. Pascal Norman and John Baker took their game up the 18th all square with Paz having to hole a 14 footer to win their game. A new pairing of Ian Burr and Jamie Marklew strolled to victory winning 6&5 with birdies and a eagle from Jamie on the 6th. Last out with Malcolm missing his usual partner paired up with Dave Hayward and coming in with a 2&1 win.

June Seniors' Medal

The Seniors' June Medal was held in atrocious conditions with heavy rain early on and very strong winds throughout. The turnout demonstrated the number of fair weather only golfers in the seniors' section! The late starters had the best of it as the rain abated and the superb greens allowed skill levels to be shown. The prize winners came, mostly, from the last three groups but Allan Bancroft bucked the trend to record a creditable nett 70 and take fourth spot. Richard Sheard shot nett 69 to come third, but was beaten by Steve Rowse on countback. Veteran George Davis shot nett 68 to win the medal and get a new lower handicap.

Wells Seniors vs. Isle of Wedmore

Wells Seniors gained a convincing 5-2 home win against Isle of Wedmore with good performances by Peter Leverick and Club Captain Stuart Mann, Nick Wilson and Chris Strickland, Nick Carter and Andy Williams and Captain Glyn Hallett and Steve Rowse. Halves were gained by Ken Ford and Colin Mantle, and Mike Gee with Richard Sheard.

Wells Stragglers vs. Saltford

On Sunday in dry, but slightly windy conditions Wells Stragglers hosted Saltford Golf Club. The result was a 4 - 1 win to Wells with wins for Bill McCullom and Gary Leigh 3&2, Steve Heath and Adam Holliday 3&1, Terry Searle and Steve Porter 6&5 and John Hockey and Bill Levell 3&2. The "Captain" Terry Pearce lost five balls on his own course and was no help to his partner Richard Sheard who manfully tried to beat the opposition, but was defeated 3&1. Pearce did apologise to his team mates which was gratefully, if teasingly accepted.

Tip of the week

Having a rough time? Let our Professionals help you!

The perfect weather combination of wind, lots of rain, and sun has left the rough lush and thick. Ideally you want to avoid the rough at all times, but at some stage you will need to face that tricky situation and overcome this tricky shot. When you're ball is in the rough, it's the decisions you make in these situations that will have the biggest impact on your scores. Good players aren't necessarily better at hitting out the rough, they just make better shot choices limiting the damage to their round.

One of the biggest mistakes that club golfers make is being too greedy with their club selection. Everyone wants to play that amazing golf shot, however only one out 10 times it gets pulled off. Our top tips for hitting from the rough are as follows:

  • More often than not you should take a very lofted club like a wedge. Even though you might not reach your desired target it gets the ball up quickly rather than the ball getting buried deeper into the rough.
  • Find the right target line which is going to give you an easy next shot. For example chip out sideways towards the fairway rather than trying to cut corners and seek shortcuts.
  • Place the ball position slightly further back in your stance and also position a little more weight onto your leading leg to help create a steeper angle of attack.
  • Tighten your grip slightly and commit to the shot.

Keep an eye out for the thick rough at Erin Hills in this year's US Open and watch how Tour Professionals concur the rough!
