Qualifying Medal and Cheddar Trophy Round Two

The second round of the Cheddar Trophy was played on Saturday, 29 July and with a relatively small field it was all to play for. Below are the results:

Division One - First place - A. Todd (Nett 69) - £12, second place - G. Dyer (Nett 70) - £6 and in third place - D. Holland (Nett 71) - £3.

Division Two - First place - R. Gould (Nett 68) - £26.40, second place - D. Cunningham (Nett70) - £13.20 and in third place - F. Lovell (Nett 70) - £6.60.

Division Three - First place - R. Chalker (Nett 74) - £22.80, second place - K. Squire (Nett 76) - £11.40
and in third place - M. Cundill (Nett 76) - £5.70.

Two spots - A. Todd (Two) - £36.66 and G. Dyer, R. Johnson, W. Hamilton and R. Sheard (One) - £18.33.

Well done to the winners and thank you to all who entered. All monies are on accounts in the professional shop.

Wells Avalon Team vs. Cricket St. Thomas

It was looking like the Avalon team were in for a wet afternoon, but luckily it never turned out as bad as the forecast. That in mind, the first two pairs wanted to get in early playing some excellent golf with Simon Jackson and Andy Williams, Jason Huck and James Church winning 6&5. Next to come in were Malcolm Terry and Glen Crocker playing some good excellent golf winning 4&3.

Alan Elkins and debutant Glyn Hallett found it tough going with Alan struggling with his back from the third hole, but only marginally lost 2&1. Last out and taking their game to the 18th encountering the worst of the rain was Ian Burr and Pascal Norman coming in with a half.

This was a great result away from home leaving the other teams with games in hand to come in with good results to catch us. Our last game of the season is at home against Tall Pines on Saturday, 26 August.

Wells Stragglers vs. Shirehampton

On Sunday the Stragglers welcomed Shirehampton to Wells for the return leg of this popular fixture.
It started awkwardly when they turned up with 12 players instead of the arranged 10, but things soon got sorted. Starting in dry, albeit overcast conditions, a very heavy shower with rumbles of thunder about half way round, didn't dampen the spirits and dry weather soon returned.

The first pairing of Bernard Young and Gary Leigh had a seemingly trouble free round and eventually triumphed 2&1. Richard Mansfield and Bill McCollum had a good lead at one stage, but a spirited fight back from their opponents meant they had to dig deep and eventually escaped with a creditable half.
John Baker and Jon Mackness played a very solid game and ran out 3&2 winners. One of the opponents went into the ditch in front of the 16th and decided to play out. The ball came out as did a large stone, the stone going further and straighter than the ball.

Craig McConnell, ably assisted by debutant Paul Cullen, gelled well together and ran out 2&1 winners. Paul enjoyed his first outing with the Stargglers, and we hope he can play more games in the future.
Last out were John Hockey and Bill Levell who lagged a bit behind the rest of the team. So much so that the kitchen had to reheat the chips, but it was worth it as they came in with a 3&2 win.

So overall, Wells ran out 4.5 - 0.5 winners on the day.... yes you did read that right... Over the two legs Wells triumphed 7.5 - 2.5. Despite the humiliating defeat, Shirehampton enjoyed the day and we all look forward to next year.

Wells Seniors' Team vs. Sherborne

Wells Seniors did well against a strong home team when they travelled to Sherborne for this season's return fixture. There were commendable performances by Bill O'Callaghan with Alan Elkins and Len Sweales with Piers Dalby, both pairs gaining well fought halved matches whilst the only winners were Allan Bancroft and George White who achieved a worthy 3&1 success. The overall four games to two result in Sherborne's favour was similar to that between these sides two weeks previously, Wells being victors on their home patch on that occasion.

Junior Golf Academy

Moving through August until early September, there will be lots of opportunity for juniors to get outdoors and play some golf. There will be Junior Roll-ups, Junior Days, Junior Lessons and much more which will encourage the future stars of our golf club.


Junior Group Lessons on Saturdays

Junior Group Lessons take place on Saturday mornings from 10:00am to 11:00am with Assistant Professional Thomas Maggs. The mornings include golf tuition covering all aspects of the game in a fun and non-pressured environment. All juniors who wish to take up the game of golf are welcome to come along to a Saturday morning and receive their FREE taster lesson.
