Stragglers match away at Worlebury - Sunday, 10 September We were expecting adverse weather conditions, but although we could see the Mendips and Wales were getting it, we had a relatively dry match with a couple of heavy showers around the 15th/16th and the wind got up a bit. First out were Terry Searle and Bill Levell. Bill went to Worlebury the week before to check out the clubhouse and coffee etc. When the rest of the team hadn't arrived by 11:15am he realised he was a week early... as Bill called it...a senior moment. Unfortunately his second visit resulted in a 3&2 defeat Second out were Paul Cullen and Steve Heath. Paul hadn't played Worlebury before but it seemed to suit him as he and Steve ran out 3&2 winners. Paul's new white club shirt looked very nice too might I add. John Baker and Steve Porter kept things under control, although frequent visits into the trees, mainly by the opposition, caused a good deal of fruity comments. At one stage John and Steve were 5Up with six to play when the rain came, so they eased off for a couple of holes, but a good half on the 16th saw them triumph 3&2. Richard Mansfield and Adam Holiday had an interesting and very tense match apparently, although not the quickest. At one stage they were three down with five to play, but a concerted effort saw them eventually earn a creditable half. Last out were Gary Leigh and Ron Davy who nearly missed the match as he got the timings wrong. Due to late illness by a Worlebury player, they were up against just one opponent. No mercy was shown as Gary and Ron won 9&8. They came in after 15 holes boasting 14 holes won and one halved. So overall Wells won 3.5 - 1.5 on the day with a total score home and away of Wells 8.5 - 1.5 winners.
