B&D Men’s League - Bristol & Clifton GC
The first men’s Bristol and District match was against Bristol & Clifton at Wells. Alan Todd and Tim Harris kicked things off with a comfortable 5&4 victory, followed by Dave Hayward and debutant Steve Barrow with a 2&1 win. Jack Baillie and Bill McCollum won 2 up as did Nick Wilson and Pascal Norman. The day was complete when Glen Crocker and Mike Metcalfe made short shift of their tortured opponents 7&6. So, a 5-0 win to start the season.

B&D Men’s League - Thornbury
The next match was against Thornbury. Unusually Alan Todd and Will Thompson succumbed in the first match, as did Steve Barrow and Dave Hayward. Pascal Norman and Nick Wilson continued their winning ways with a 5&4 victory, as did Mike Metcalfe and Glen Crocker who won 6&4. This left it all down to the last match to decide the overall result. Ian Burr and Jack Baillie had a topsy turvy game with the lead changing hands on numerous occasions. They finally ran out of luck, losing one down. Thus the team suffered a difficult 3 - 2 home defeat and a major setback to the season.

Men's Avalon Team
It was the second week running playing at home in nice sunny conditions and the Avalon team played against Stockwood Vale C Team. First out Simon Jackson and Andy Williams cruised ahead, 5 up after eight they took their foot off the pedal but still won 3&1. Mike Metcalfe and Jason Huck next out found themselves up against it with one of their opponents with a handicap of 15 playing to 6 and lost 5&4. Glen Crocker and new to the team Brian Mitchard were down for most of their game, but managed to grind out a halve. Pascal Norman and Adam Payne dovetailed well winning 4&2. Last out the only pairing to play together this season was Jamie Marklew and Danny Wyrwoll winning 3&2. The next fixture is away at Stockwood on Saturday, 3rd June, let’s keep this good form up team Wells!

Men’s Somerset Bowl In the Men’s Somerset Bowl, Jason Huck and Simon Jackson had a fine 7&5 win. Will Thompson and Pascal Norman fought hard to win 1 up. Steve Clark and Gary Nutt won their match 5&4. Alan Todd and son Sam triumphed 3&2 and Mike Metcalfe and Nick Wilson managed a half. Thus Wells won the match 4.5 - 0.5 and progressed.

Ladies’ Karen Nicholls Foursomes
The ladies gathered to compete in the Karen Nicholls Foursomes competition on a perfect day for golf. Settling down after a shaky start the strong pairing of Sue Wells, who first had her name on the trophy in 1986, partnered by Tina Davies won the gross competition. Their playing partners Gill Magrath and Janice White were inspired by the long drives and careful putting to claim the nett trophy, just ahead of Erica Klim and Cath Levell.

Ladies Interclub League
The Ladies Interleague Team played a home game against Orchardleigh. The Team Captain, Jill Bocquet had a nip and tuck game and won the 17th and 18th holes to halve the match. Her partner played the 12th up the 1st, but ended up on the 16th tee for her shot to the green! Gill Magrath fought hard and it came down to the last putt to decide the outcome in her match. Kathy Lane, Janice White and Erica Klim won their games and the match was halved. |
Seniors’ Somerset Bowl Wells Seniors played Saltford in the first round of the Seniors’ Somerset Bowl recently. The neutral venue was Stockwood Vale. Glyn Hallett and Alan Elkins renewed their partnership in the first match and up against a very strong team from Saltford did well to only lose one down. Chris Betenson and Malcolm Terry had a tight match, but came through to win 1 up. Mike Magrath and Bill McCollum halved their match. Veteran George Davis paired with Steve Clark continued their recent individual good form winning 4&2. Captain for the day Steve Rowse was joined by Grant Rogers who travelled back from Cornwall to make his debut. It was all worthwhile as they won 4&3. Wells are now through to the next round with a 3.5 - 1.5 win.

The Stragglers In beautiful hot sunshine and the course in excellent condition, Wells Stragglers hosted a team from Sherborne. I don't think Sherborne knew it was friendly competition as they seemed to bring most of their first team looking at the handicaps. Even though they all had beers and lagers for breakfast rather than coffee, it didn't seem to have the effect we hoped. First out; John Baker and Richard Mansfield were never behind although not very far in front. One up with one to play, Richard just missed a tricky three footer on the last to half the hole resulting in a creditable half. Mark Edgell and Gary Leigh were out second and gelled together well with never more than one in it, eventually finishing with a halve. Craig McConnell and Jon Mackness came up against a 14 handicapper and a formidable 5 handicapper. The pairing proved too strong and the visitors triumphed 3&2. Steve Heath and Guy Timson also found the going tough against a strong pairing and succumbed to a 4&3 defeat. Finally Bill Levell and Stuart Gowen battled hard and a good five foot swinging putt on the last by Stuart saw them halve their match. Final result at the half-way stage Wells 1.5 - Sherborne 3.5, so all to fight for at Sherborne in July.

Open Mic Night and Roll-up
The first nine hole roll-up golf on a Thursday evening proved a great success, as did the Open Mic Night afterwards. Club members and visitors showed their talents to the full with a range of music from country and western to pop being enjoyed. Everyone is looking forward to the next one on Thursday, 14 June.

NEW IN - Callaway XR Speed
We are now holding stock of the very latest driver and fairway woods from Callaway. After a very successful release last year of the Epic range and the most recent Rogue series, Callaway have now released the XR Speed. Some of the best features are below: - Callaway VFT Technology - This driver face technology is the most lightest and flexible face, Callaway Golf have ever designed. Maximising ball speeds across the entire club face, to provide the hottest ever face.
- Carbon Composite Crown - This lightweight crown material is 45% lighter, than the previous model XR 16 titanium crown, providing increased MOI and lower centre of gravity position. This improves launch and forgiveness, with the added benefit of more distance.
- Refined Speed Step - This Boeing engineered aerodynamic head shape with Speed Step, this design is more efficient with improved air flow to generate more clubhead speed.
- Project X HZRDUS Shaft - The shaft is a key component to any driver, that’s why XR Speed comes stock with an ultra-premium Project X HZRDUS graphite shaft. Delivering explosive distance, without sacrificing distance and control.
- Next-Gen Hyper Speed Face Cup and Shallow Face - The fairway wood features a more refined forged face cup, promoting maximum distance on all your golf shots. This technology optimises ball speed all along the face, so even off centre strikes preserve more energy transfer, for greater distance performance. This fairway metal has a shallow face design and Hawkeye sole, ensuring better turf-interaction and a super-easy launch.

Why you should get custom fitted with GC2 Launch Monitor
For over 12 months the Professional team have been using the Foresight GC2 Launch monitor to provide our customers with excellent feedback and accurate results. A launch monitor is used to record the golf ball and golf club after impact (similar to a missile tracking radar) and gathers data for both the customer and operator to look at. This data can be very useful for your golf game. What can you use the GC2 for? - Golf Club Yardages – How far the ball travels with each club
- Custom Fitting Clubs – See the benefits from new technology
- Golf Ball Fitting – What ball is best for you
- Play golf indoors on simulated courses such as Hazeltine, Carnoustie and many more..
- Indoor Driving Range Practice – When the weather turns you can practice indoors
The Professional Team – Recommendation
