Seniors' Open 2018 Wednesday, 16 May saw 180 senior golfers from all over the South West of England assembled at Wells Golf Club for a two ball Texas scramble. The course played well and scores were very good indeed. Over £900 was given in prizes offering prizes for high and low combinations of players as well as home and away players. The first tee time was 7:50am and the players went off continuously until 3:30pm. The final pair arrived back at the clubhouse at 8:40pm. Overall winners were N. Harvey (Wells) and S. Pearson (Mendip) - 61.2. The first away team was M. Taylor and L. Trowbridge from West Wilts - 61.5 whilst the first home team was M. Metcalfe and R. Streeter (Burnham) - 62.5. The second away team was R. Goodwin and P. Fleming of Sherborne - 62.7 and the second home team was A. Baker and M. Cundill - 63, who also won the Arthur Rice Trophy as the best home pair with both players coming from Wells.

Wells Seniors vs. Enmore and Knowle (Both away) Wells Seniors enjoyed two away matches at Enmore Park on Tuesday, 8 May and Knowle on Monday, 14 May. On both occasions the home team won, but the majority of games were closely fought and not decided until the last couple of holes. Bringing respectability to the Wells side were Dave Gibbon and Andrew Boatswain (won 5&4), Steve Rowse and Ged Ramsell (won 4&3) and Peter Leverick and John Chillington (halved) at Enmore Park, while at Knowle Nick Carter and Len Sweales won 5&4, and Bill McCollum and John Moxon won 2&1.

Wells Stragglers vs. Mendip Spring On Sunday the Stragglers travelled to the popular fixture at Mendip Spring. The weather could not have been better with bright sunshine and a bit of breeze. First out Richard Mansfield and Bill Levell unfortunately lost 3&2. Bill had trouble with his wife and his clock in the morning and arrived to pick Richard up an hour early. Good job he was out of bed and nearly ready. Team two was John Hockey and Craig McConnell. John and Craig achieved a creditable half. Third was Steve Heath and Paul Hembury who fought valiantly but eventually lost 2&1. The consolation was that Steve won the nearest the pin in two on the 15th. Fourth was John Baker and Guy Timson who gelled together very well getting the better of their opponents and eventually had the best score of the day winning 5&4. Last, but by no means least were Adam Holliday and Stuart Gowen, who finally came in when nearly all the chips had gone, but with a well-earned victory 2&1. So overall the result was 2.5 - 2.5. We all look forward to the return leg at Wells at the end of June.

Top quality grips with top quality service... Re-gripping your golf clubs is often over looked, Formula One drivers wouldn’t drive their car with bald tyres so how can you expect to hit good golf shots with slippery, worn grips. As a golfer you have a wide variety of replacement grips available, when considering this it’s good to select a material, texture, design and colour that’s best suited to your style, playing level, and the weather conditions you will be playing in. However one of the most popular and main reasons we change the grips are to replace worn-out, slick grips that contribute to excessive grip tension and pressure.
In theory grips should be replaced every 40 rounds or every 30 rounds if you’re spending a considerable amount of time at the practice range. Regardless of rounds played, a grip should always be replaced at the first sign of noticeable wear such as hard surfaces, shinny patches, cracks, wear spots and complete loss of tack. Improperly sized grips and grips that aren’t suited for certain weather conditions will negatively impact your game and cost you strokes. Comfort, consistency, shot dispersion and shot distance can all be improved with new golf grips.

We may be heading into summer soon but it’s still important to have the right clothing on you in case the weather changes. A lightweight mid-layer is the perfect piece to keep in your bag for exactly this reason, and combining it with other layers can create a great look.
