Charlie's Charity Golf Day – Friday, 1 June Charlie Lewis, one of our Wells Golf Club members, hosted his annual ‘Charlie's Charity Golf Day’ again this year in aid of Kidneys for Life Charity. At the age of 21 Charlie was diagnosed with stage four chronic kidney disease and this has left Charlie with 18% kidney function. The disease will always be a part of Charlie's life so Charlie and his brother Sam Lewis decided to make good of the situation by organising a charity day. The charity Kidneys for Life raises money to help and support people suffering with a similar kidney condition. This is now the third year Charlie has arranged this popular event and this year turned out to be another great success. The event was a 4BBB Stableford with some excellent prizes up for grabs supported by TaylorMade Golf. Following on from their previous year’s performance the winners this year were Tom Roberts and Edward Higgs winning a TaylorMade Spider putter each. Close behind the junior pairing were Rich James and James Capper winning a TaylorMade Lite stand bag each (Grey and red). In third place was Paul Hawkins and Steve Coppell winning a TaylorMade Milled Grind wedge each. Finally in fourth place were Stuart Hole and Jack Palmer winning a TaylorMade stand bag each. To round off these superb prizes Charlie also held a raffle for an M4 driver worth £329! Congratulations to Will Fuermage and well done to all the prize winners.
Charlie would like to thank everyone who entered/contributed to make ‘Charlie's Charity Golf Day 2018’ in aid of Kidneys for Life a huge success and a cracking day once again. With everyone’s generosity we have managed to raise £1,248 for Kidneys for Life, and I’m sure they will be extremely grateful for that.

Wells Seniors vs. Farrington Seniors (Home) – Thursday, 31st May
Wells Seniors enjoyed two wins in their last two matches of May, one away at Wedmore on Monday, 21st May and the other at home against Farrington on Thursday, 31st May. In both cases the margin of victory was four and a half games to two and a half. The successful Wells pairings at Wedmore were Peter Leverick and Len Sweales, Graham Bingham and Piers Dalby, Nick Wilson and Ron Hancock (all winning 3&2), with George White and Pete Boehm (making his Seniors' debut) winning 3&1. Captain for the day; Steve Rowse and Mike Gee halved their game, while Mike Hiles also made his first appearance in a Seniors' match. At home to Farrington, Mike Gee and Jock McKinven won 3&2, Steve Bocquet and Dave Couzens won 2 up, and Graham Bingham and Ron Hancock won 1 up. Graham had played his President's Cup match immediately beforehand, which went to the 20th hole, but came off after 38 holes looking as fresh as when he started! There were three halved matches from Glyn Hallett and John Moxon, Peter Leverick and Piers Dalby, and Nick Wilson and Tony Harrison.

Wells Stragglers vs. Saltford (Away) – Sunday, 20th May On a blistering hot afternoon, the Stragglers travelled to Saltford for this popular fixture. After a very hearty breakfast the first pairing of John Hockey and Paul Hembury got us under way and after an up and down match the result was a half. Second out were Richard Sheard and Bill Levell. After an interesting start when Richard couldn't believe how far his tee shot went they persevered to come in with another half.Third were John Baker and Scott Barrett. The Saltford pairing were very impressive and almost untouchable. One of them having an eagle putt on a par five after two enormous hits. The result was always going to be a home win and this proved to be the case. Fourth out were Adam Holliday and Gary Leigh. A spirited yet sometime quiet encounter saw them 2 down with 2 to play. An eventful 17th where the water and long grass came into play, saw the home team win the match 2&1. Finally, Mark Edgell and Guy Timson had a very tight match. Guy was playing the course for the first time and commented afterwards what a great course it was. They obviously found it to their liking as they also fought out a half. So overall the home team won 3.5 - 1.5 with the return leg at Wells in June.

Do you struggle with your putting? Here are some quick and simple tips you can try to improve your putting.
|
Tip 1 – Coin Drill (Tempo) Balance a coin on the back of your putter. This drill is designed to keep your tempo smooth during your putting stroke. If your stroke is too quick and out of rhythm you will see the coin fall off the putter before impact. The main objective is to create a smooth pendulum motion keeping the coin on the putter until you strike the ball.
|
|
Tip 2 – Keep your eyes over the ball Getting your eyes over the golf ball in your set-up promotes a number of benefits that improve your address position and putting stroke. Having your eyes positioned directly over the golf ball accomplishes three things. First, your head and body fall into the proper position at address. Next, the ideal distance to the ball is established and this ensures that your arms sit close to your body creating a strong connection to help rock your shoulders.
|
Tip 3 – Strike Are you striking the middle of the clubface when you putt? Once you have worked on the above drills, attach two elastic bands around the clubface. This will identify whether you striking the ball correctly, if you strike the ball outside the sweet spot your ball will jump and bounce off the face. Top Tip - Do not break the wrists. This will have an impact on strike and the speed of your putt! If you're still struggling to hole those important putts then please speak to a member of our professional team on 01749 679059 or click here to send us an email. We can analyse your putting stroke and potentially look into if your putter is right for you.

We’re sure the majority of you will agree that having a distance device on the course is a huge benefit, going hand-in-hand with knowing how far you hit each club. For those of you in the market for a laser rangefinder or GPS device, here are a few options within Garmin’s range to suit different preferences. |
Pinpoint laser accuracy There's one standout feature to Garmin's Z80 laser rangefinder that sets it apart from all others on the market. As well as giving precise distances up to 350 yards away, the Z80 also includes hole maps that are integrated into the viewfinder, which display the shape of the hole and provide front and back distances when you lock on to the flag. |
|
Information at a glance If you prefer wearable technology, Garmin has both GPS watches and bands to suit all styles. The Approach S60 watch, seen here on the left, boasts colour hole maps, hazard information and offers front, middle and back yardages. The other, the Approach X40 band, is a slim, lightweight and waterproof wristband that gives you distances to the green and to hazards, as well as heart rate and activity tracking. |
