Stragglers vs. Tall Pines (Away) - Sunday, 1 July
On Sunday the Stragglers travelled to the popular fixture away at Tall Pines. The weather wasn't quite as sunny as it has been, but it was still very warm and pleasant. First out were Steve Heath and late replacement Guy Timson. The match was very tight, however the home team proved a little bit stronger so Steve and Guy lost two down. Second out were Paul Hembury and Terry Searle. Terry was playing his first match for some time due to an injury and it was good to see him back. All didn't go quite to plan though as they succumbed 5&4 loss. Third were John Baker and new recruit Richard Williams. Never behind, John and Richard gelled well together and when the score was dormy 3, John played an excellent chip on the par four 16th which went in for an eagle two resulting in a convincing 4&2 win. Fourth out were Phil Kenworthy and Adam Holliday. Adam surprisingly had never played Tall Pines before and had never partnered Phil before, but they put all that behind them and came in with a creditable 2&1 win. Fifth were Mark Edgell and Bill Levell who came up against some stiff opposition. They fought well but the home pairing proved that little too strong and they lost 4&3. Last out were the left handed pairing of Richard Mansfield and Gary Leigh. It seemed they were always ahead, but a spirited fight back by their opponents saw the match go all the way to the 18th. Gary succeeded in out putting the home side and they won one up. So overall, the match was halved 3 - 3, with the eagerly anticipated return leg at Wells on Sunday, 22 July. It'll be interesting to see if the Captain can fight his way back into the team.
