Stragglers at Dawlish Warren - Sunday, 2 September
On Sunday, the Stragglers travelled to the popular fixture away at Dawlish Warren.Terry promised us sand, sea and no trees. Well, the sun tried to put in an appearance, the tide was out, and yes, the trees were hard to find. We welcomed Simon Harris to his first Stragglers game, and it appeared that him, Ben and Paul had never played Dawlish before so it was a bit of a challenge. But everyone agreed the course was enjoyable and the company very friendly. First out were Richard Williams and Simon Harris. After a promising start, the opposition proved too strong and they lost 4&2. Second, Richard Mansfield and John Baker were two up at one stage, but a consistent eight handicapper with superb iron play proved unbeatable and they also lost 4&2 Third were Ben Jones and Paul Cullen. Having never played here before the duo struggled but a series of birdies by the opposition resulted in a creditable 2&1 defeat. Fourth were Terry Searle and Bill Levell. A good tight game ensued, but again the opposition proved too strong and despite Bills approach to the 18th bouncing along the club house roof, they lost 2&1. Finally, our last team of Steve Heath and Adam Holiday never really got going. Normally our bankers, they found the opposition a bit of a handful and succumbed 5&4. A narrow 5-0 defeat means it’s all to play for on the return match on Sunday, 23 September. |
