Seniors Somerset Bowl Final
Wells GC seniors` team took on Farrington Park seniors` in the final of the Seniors` Somerset Bowl recently, at Mendip GC. The weather was amazing considering the time of year, setting off the matches under a blue sky. The wind got up as time went on and the temperatures dropped, making the difficult conditions no easier. First out Nick Carter and Mike Magrath, and second out Bill McCollum and Andy Williams made short work of their opponents, both winning 4&3. Captain Glen Crocker and Nick Carter had a comfortable afternoon, never behind and winning 5&4 to clinch the match quite quickly. Fourth out Tim Harris and Martin Waller had a mountain to climb, giving nine shots. They were up to the job and triumphed 2&1. The middle match, featuring Martin Barnes and Steve Clark against formidable opponents, quickly went Farrington`s way as they went 4up. The Wells players fought back gamely and eventual had a fantastic halve.
This meant that Wells won the match 4.5 to 0.5 and became 2018 Somerset Seniors` Bowl winners, the second time the club have won the trophy. Thanks must go to the few brave people who turned up and supported both teams. |

Don’t struggle with chipping or pitching, sometimes you can blame your wedges!
If you are finding it hard to stop the ball on the greens, then you need to consider sharpening up your wedge play with NEW wedges. Grooves on your shorter clubs wear quickly especially in harder ground conditions which wears the surface on your clubface. However, in order to generate spin, the clubface on your wedges need to be rough. In store we arguably have the best wedges on the market Titleist SM7, Callaway Mac Daddy 4 and PING Glide wedges. To make it easier to digest there is three important factors to reasons why you should buy a new set of wedges.
|
GROOVES - Having clean, clear grooves will create maximum spin. Control will be lost if your grooves are old and worn.
BOUNCE ANGLE - Wedges have difference bounce angles and they are very important and useful. The bounce angle on the wedge is can aid your technique and also where you play most your golf. For example, if you play most your golf on a links course you may want to consider less
This helps you get the leading edge closer to the surface of the ground resulting in a cleaner strike. On the other hand, if you play on a parkland course where the ground can be softer and grass is thicker you would need to consider more bounce. This will stop the club digging in so the club glides through the surface and promotes a cleaner strike. LOFT - Loft is key when purchasing wedges as your gapping between each club needs to be equal. This will help you to control your trajectory and yardages resulting in closer approach shots and more spin. In an ideal situation around four degrees of loft between each wedge is a good gap. |

Sometimes it's nice to reminisce about the good times. When it comes to golf, the days of persimmon woods, small clubheads and hitting balls which were hard as a rock are long gone - but it can help to take a trip down memory lane to remind us of just how much technology has developed, particularly in the case of drivers. |
Time tunnel
Take TaylorMade for example; you might have been lucky enough to own its iconic r7 Quad driver way back in 2004. The r7 was memorable for introducing the then-revolutionary concept of changeable weights in a driver, which was a massive shift from the conventional 'one weight fits all' approach. The r7 Quad is a classic club, and is certainly remembered with fondness. Fast-forward to the present day and TaylorMade has released its most technologically advanced driver to date in the form of the M3. The M3 really shows just how far we've come in terms of moveable weights, with a Y-Track feature that allows golfers to adjust their settings for optimal trajectory, maximum forgiveness, or less spin. So, whilst it is nice to think about your first ever driver, it's probably time to get up to speed with the latest models such as the M3. Who knows? Maybe in another 10 years time, you'll be looking back on the M3 with as much fondness as the r7 Quad! |
