IMPORTANT NOTICE REMINDER

"I am writing to inform you that I will be leaving Wells Golf Club as I am taking up the appointment of Head Professional at Long Ashton Golf Club. Thomas Maggs will be joining me as Head Assistant Professional.

Tom and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and help since I took over in January 2015, we both have many friends here and I trust you have enjoyed the service my team and I have provided.

I will miss Wells and the friendships I have made here, but I hope some of you will visit Long Ashton through the 1893 reciprocal arrangement, and I look forward to seeing you there.

Competition news

Seniors update

The seniors' summer cups reached their zenith just as the trees on the course started to display their Autumn hues.

In the Presidents Cup, the final of the main 2018 Seniors' Pairs competition was won by Glyn Hallett and Alan Elkins who overcame Warren Hamilton and David Shepherd with a resounding 5&4 victory. The match was actually quite tight over the front nine but particularly steady play then got Hallett and Elkins to build quickly on their two shot advantage to finally close matters out on the 14th green, their opponents being worthy runners up in this keenly contested annual competition.

The final of the Seniors Singles was won by Bill McCollum who overcame Alan Thompson, also with a resounding 5&4 victory. The front nine saw Alan taking a two-hole lead before going all square on the eighth hole, Bill then took control winning hole 9 and then four out of the next five to close out the game. Alan was a worthy opponent to finish runner up and must be congratulated on reaching the final.

Irwin Trophy

The Irwin Trophy is eagerly looked forward to each year being a mixed greensomes event. With plenty of camaraderie between the pairs despite the tail end of Storm Callum bringing blustery winds Bill and Cath Levell claimed the trophy with 33 points with Sandy and Steve Heath in second place on countback from Erica Klim and Stuart Mann.

Stragglers Yellow Ball event

In fine autumnal sunshine the Stragglers and guests went out to play the “Yellow Ball”. The contest was keenly fought with the overall winning team being Stuart Gowen, Steve Heath and Simon Elliot. Steve Barrow won the nearest the pin in two.

Ladies Pamela Manuel Trophy

The Ladies Pamela Manuel Trophy was won by her daughter, Erica Klim who was pleased to have won it on her first attempt.

Mrs Manuel has been a member for over 32 years.

Indoor Yardage Evaluation & Game Assessment with PGA Professional Thomas Maggs - ONLY 2 SPOTS LEFT

It’s vital that every player knows their yardages. Even after a good looking shot you may still find yourself just in the bunker, or just in the trees. However, if you know how far you can hit the ball you stand a greater chance of avoiding sticky situations. During the month of October I have two slots left for a Yardage Evaluation & Game Assessment on the following dates and times:

Slot 5: Tuesday, 23 October - 4:30pm - 5:30pm

Slot 6: Tuesday, 23 October - 5:30pm - 6:30pm

Indoor Yardage Evaluation and Game Assessment includes:

- A yardage chart emailed to you and also given as a hard copy

- Key advice on your current clubs and whether they are right for you

- An overview of your game targeting strengths and weaknesses

Accuracy over distance

If you watched the Ryder Cup last month then one thing should have become clear to you: finding the fairway off the tee is a must. Whilst distance does help, there's no point thrashing a drive as far as you can if you don't hit the fairway, finding yourself cutting down trees as a result - as depicted in the illustration below.

Find the short stuff

In order to shoot lower scores you need to put a premium on finding the fairway, something that a custom fitting for Callaway's Rogue driver will certainly help with.
