Stuart's On the Lesson Tee - Mythbuster
This week we will be taking a look at one of the top myths that unfortunately has hurt many people’s golf games, and that is the idea that you should keep your head still or ‘down’ when you swing a golf club. Everyone knows that you’re supposed to keep your head still when you hit a golf ball, right? Well actually, not really no! Most of you will have been told by a friend or a family member at some point that you should try to keep your head still, or down, or that you should keep your eyes on the ball. You may yourself have told somebody that you know who’s starting out at golf to do exactly the same thing.
To be fair, keeping your ‘eyes on the ball’ is obviously a good idea (to a point). If you were to shut your eyes on the backswing or turn your gaze away from the ball so that you can no longer see it, then you will probably struggle. However, that doesn’t mean that you should keep your eyes ‘glued’ to the ball. Some natural head rotation, a little shifting side to side, and even a little vertical motion is completely normal in a full swing, after all, the golf swing is a very athletic motion, we rotate our bodies, shift our weight and generate quite a bit of force when we hit a golf ball.
If you look at professional golfers, some of them might be looking behind the ball at impact, some of them at the ball, and then some of them may be looking beyond the ball when they strike it. Not only that, they aren’t even thinking about whether they ‘see’ the ball at impact or not, it’s just not on their radar. For some reason though, amateur golfers are very determined to keep that head down or still. If you feel like you’re ‘looking up’ when you hit the ball, the chances are that your motion is a little mist-timed in some way, that doesn’t mean the answer is trying to keep your head still. You are allowed to see where the ball has gone after all.
Of course, if you are moving your head excessively, it will no doubt cause you some problems, but quite often that motion will be rooted in something else and simply trying to keep your head still won’t really solve the problem. A much better thing to focus on would be turning your body to face the target as you finish the swing and being positive. Freedom in your motion is generally much more desirable than trying to keep some part of you still. If you have any questions about how this or any other aspect of your game, feel free to come and see us in the shop and we’ll be glad to help.

We all want to enjoy playing golf, and a big part of this is lowering our handicap. Yes, there will be times when your game isn't up to scratch and you go up .1 a few times in a row, but there'll also be times when all of the puzzle pieces fit and your handicap tumbles. |
What does your graph look like? As the year comes to an end, it's important to take stock and examine where you can improve your game going into the new year. There might be several areas that you want/need to work on, or maybe just two or three finer details that will take your game to the next level. |
Whatever those areas are, we're here to help. We can identify the key reasons you're not shooting the scores you want, as well as devise a personalised winter coaching plan to help iron out those faults and get you paying your best golf. So, if you want to see your handicap tumble in 2019, come down to the shop for a chat - you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain. |
