Avalon team report from Jason Huck
The Avalon team took on Tall Pines at Wells on Sunday in good but breezy conditions coming away 4-1 winners. When Wessy and I managed to secure our win on 14, there was only Ian and James winning so I went out on the course to rally them on, Mike Metcalfe and Malcolm Terry all square going up 15, Richard Sheard and Mike Magrath 4 down on 13 and Simon Jackson and Pete Walker all square going up 18- it a very tight game with only ever one in it.
Mike and Richard managed to get one back on 15 but went on and lost on 16.
Mike and Malcolm went down 17 all square with Mike making birdie to win the hole and halved 18 to win the match.
The most exciting match coming from Simon and Pete on 18 with only really Simon and one of the Tall Pines players in the hole, Simon managed to get on the green in 2 but a long way from the hole and they were 5ft away in 3. Simon left his putt 5ft short leaving a putt off between the 2 of them. It was decided it was there putt 1st and his putt grazed the hole, how it never dropped I don't know! So it was down to Simon's putt which after a good putt hung on the hole and dropped (apparently I could not watch!) to win the hole.
Simon Jackson / Pete Walker - Won 1up
Jason Huck / Mark Western - Won 5&4
Mike Metcalfe / Malcolm Terry Won 1up
Richard Sheard / Mike Magrath Lost 3&2
Ian Burr / James Church Won 4&3
Become best friends with your putter this season!
Many golfers choose putters off the shelf because they fancy a change, or simply like the look, as a result a putter which isn't fitted to you will add strokes to your score. There is some basic guidelines to ensure you are playing with the correct putter which are as followed:
Length
If your putter is too long you can create too much space between your body and elbows at address. Signs of a long putter is having the toe upright and scuffing the ground with the heel.
Most standard putters you typically find in a pro shop would be around 35 inches, therefore, if you are taller than 6ft then you may want to consider changing the length of your putter.
Alignment Features & Head Shape
Different putter designs help to address the putter towards the target. If you struggle to line up your putts then having a different head design can aid your alignment. For example an odyssey 2ball putter has two golf ball shapes indicated on the crown of the putter.
Grip
The correct grip size helps to keep the hands still throughout the stroke so you can simply rock your shoulders. If the grip size is too small this can lead into your hands becoming more active causing a variation of clubface alignment at impact.
Lie Angle
The lie angle is very important when getting fitted for a putter as this can affect your centeredness of strike. The sole of the putter needs to be level with the ground so you can make contact with the face more consistently. For example if the putter is too long or the toe is sitting up at address, the ball will be struck out the heel causing the ball to travel incorrectly.
Weight
Each putter has a different weight and now manufactures are creating putters with movable weights. Having a heavy putter can help to slow down the putting stroke which can be good for fast greens. A lighter putter will help golfers who struggle to get the ball past the hole, as a result lighter putters work better on slower greens.
Face Insert
Putters are made with different face inserts to create different feels when striking the ball. Insert putters use materials which are either hard or soft to create different feels. These inserts are now combined with milled technology which helps to get the ball rolling quicker on line.
