Correct your ball position for a better strike!

Have you ever thought about your ball position?

There is no right or wrong method on where a ball should be positioned with every golfer however there are some basic guidelines golfers need to follow to which can be tailored to the individual.

The ball position will dramatically determine the shot outcome and strike therefore the ball needs to be in the correct positon to hit the desired shot, again this is dependent on the players swing.

How do we understand the ball positon?

There are some simple steps to follow when checking you have the correct ball position and below are a few guidelines to help you:

Assuming you are on flat ground, a golfer will set up as normal. As you can see in the first picture there is a white alignment stick pointing up towards the left chest of the player. This is where the golf club generally meets its lowest part of the arc on the downswing (the correct place) and this is where the ball should be! As the club lengthens the bottom of the arc moves forward (closer to the front foot)

In addition as the club lengthens the ball positon should move slightly forward (closer to the target), this means the clubhead can make contact with the ball at the bottom of the arc correctly. This is shown with the driver.

Therefore rather than moving the ball, we progressively move the right foot (shown in picture) away as the club lengthens (this moves the ball position for us)

Therefore our left foot (Front foot) can stay in the same place from the Driver all the way down to the Wedge but we simply move our right foot to determine the ball position. This method is shown below in a sequence of images.

This method is based on a right handed player so therefore these principles will be opposite for a left handed player.

So next time you are practicing have a look at your ball position or for more advice please as.

Shoes

Spiked or Spikeless?

Are you struggling to decide whether you want Spiked or Spikeless golf shoes?

In the professional shop we have a wide selection of shoes from the latest FootJoy range which has a variety of different spike types. The spikeless golf shoe has become more popular throughout the years and are worn by many of the world's top golfers, however many golfers still trust the traditional spiked golf shoe.

Why have players chosen Spikeless Shoes?

Spikeless golf shoes all kicked off when Freddie Couples wore them at The Masters 2010. Since then spikeless shoe sales have gone through the roof and the likes of Justin Rose, Graeme McDowell and Ernie Ells have ditched the spikes and gone spikeless. Spikeless golf shoes are lighter than your ordinary golf shoes and these offer you supreme comfort leaving your feet to feeling fresh after your round. The soles of spikeless golf shoes are generally moulded with a tough material to withstand rough ground conditions but in addition they offer comfort from the soft insoles. There is also different types of spikeless golf shoe such as the Contour casual which is a classic and sophisticated look which can be worn anywhere. On the other hand there is the Superlite Golf Shoes which are based around a sports trainer, ideal for the summer periods.

Team Reports & Junior Results

Sunday 14th June, was a good day for golfing and after an excellent brunch, Wells Men's social team, the Stragglers, playing away, took on a Saltford team. Notoriously strong on their home turf, Saltford lived up to their reputation, and produced some excellent golf which the Wells' team on the day, could not contain. Consequently, there were unusually heavy defeats for each of the pairings of Mike McKay and Philip Spring, Vic Burgoyne and Colin Mantle, and also stand-in Captain, John Baker with Pete Michell. With Alan Elkins and Ron Davey losing 2&1, Terry Searle and Phil Kenworthy provided the best of the Wells' scores by losing only 1 down. However, spirits were revived after the game by generous helpings of sandwiches and chunky chips.

On Tuesday, 16th June, Wells Seniors played an extremely hard fought match against Filton. Although at home, Wells started slowly, with the first two pairings of Mike Gee and John Watson then Mike Stringer and Ron Hancock losing close games. Wells came back strongly with wins by Captain Peter Leverick and David Flinders (2&1), Alan Elkins and Allan Bancroft (1up) and George Davis and George White (4&3). Filton levelled the match with a win over Stuart Mann and John Moxon. In the final match veteran Ken Stokes and Peter Bartholomew triumphed 2&1 to give Wells an overall 4 - 3 victory.

On Thursday 18th June, the Seniors played away at Long Sutton. Mike Magrath and Ken Ford won 2&1, while the pairings of Peter Leverick and Mike Stringer and Nick Carter with Ron Hancock both secured good Halves. However, with local knowledge against them, Adrian Lawrence and Bill Carruthers, Mike Gee and Len Sweales and Piers Dalby with John Watson, all lost hard fought games, giving Long Sutton a 4-2 victory overall.

The Avalon team played away at Oake Manor once more this week, again in dry but windy conditions! Unusually, the strong pairing of Simon Jackson and Pete Walker lost 4&2. Next out was James Church with debutant Alan Elkins who found themselves 4 down after 6 holes. The pair worked hard to recover the situation, with Elkins winning the last 2 holes to halve their game. Stalwarts, Mike Metcalfe and Malcolm Terry, playing the same opponents as in the home match at Wells, put on a fine performance and came away with a comfortable 5&3 win. John Baker and Colin Mantle had a very tight match with only one shot in the game but came away with a great 1 up win. The last pairing of Ian Burr and Jason Huck played a close fought game but eventually succumbed, losing 2&1, making the overall team result a half.

Junior Roll up Results

1st Ben Roberts - 30pts
2nd Ed Higgs - 24pts (Under 12 Medal)
3rd Caleb Wickham - 18pts
3rd Leyton Woods - 18pts
5th Will Coles - 15pts

Another glorious summer evening for the second roll up of the June. However, the conditions weren't quite as amenable as two weeks ago. A little bit of wind and a hard and fast course; seemingly it was set-up to match this week's US Open.

There was some great scoring though and Ben Roberts continued his good recent form to take this weeks competition with an impressive 30pts. This even included a "drive, chip and putt" 3 on the 8th, the hardest hole on the course. A second big cut in his handicap is coming!

2nd was Ed "consistent" Higgs, playing to his handicap again - 7 straight net pars for his first 7 holes and another U12 medal for the evening. See you all next week for a range night, and then the next roll up will be the 2nd July.
