Last Sunday a strong contingent of Wells' Juniors took to the field in the Saltford Junior Open, producing excellent results in the Under 14's. 9 year old Freddie Lovell scored a gross 89, to give him the best net of 60. Another Wells player, 11 year old Tom Roberts, came second with a gross 93, net 63. A Wells team of Freddie Lovell, Tom Roberts and Atley Stacey Day also won the best team event. Congratulations to all the competitors. All three competitors are all now part of the 8 man scholarship squad, the future is Wells.
The July Seniors` medal was played recently on a beautiful day with clear blue skies and minimal wind. The course was in fantastic condition with plenty of run and quite quick greens which putted smoothly throughout. A decent sized field returned generally good scores as was to be expected in the conditions. Two creditable nett 71`s from Terry Searle and Stephen Payne were just outside the prizes. Glen Crocker shot a competent 79 ( nett 70 ) to play to handicap and take third place. Peter Leverick , the Seniors` 2015 Captain, defied the usual mid season loss of form that comes with captaincy carding an excellent 77 ( nett 67 ) which would normally be a winning score. However,Dave Hayward , the Seniors` Vice captain, kept it in the metaphoric family playing some magnificent golf and shooting 75 ( nett 65 ). His win has been on the cards for some time as he has been playing well all season without achieving the scores in singles medal competition. The win means he becomes another single figure handicap senior golfer.
On Friday last, Wells Seniors entertained an Enmore Park team with the background sounds of Glastonbury Festival ever present. Wells put in a strong performance with wins from Peter Leverick and Mike Perry (4&3), Ron Hancock and John Moxon (3&2), Ken Stokes and David Flinders (3&2), Mike Gee and Peter Bartholomew (5&4), Gary Middleton and Len Sweales (5&4). Adrian Lawrence with John Watson and David Wensley with Mike Shave fought hard but lost to strong opponents, although overall Wells won the match convincingly.
Wells Somerset Bowl team met Taunton & Pickeridge G C in the second round of the Bowl, played on an excellently presented course at Wedmore G C recently. Unfortunately the weather was far from excellent with a howling gale driving across the course for the entire match, making for mixed fortunes for both teams. For Wells, Josh Higgs and Gary Middleton had an up and down type of game, eventually losing 1 down on the last hole, whilst the usually strong pairing of Simon Lord and Zac Cambourne underperformed in their 3 & 2 defeat. Jet lagged Alan Todd and Ian Burr were hugely disappointed with their 8 & 6 defeat. Pascal Norman and Nick Wilson fought a grand battle, coming back from 3 down to win 1 up. Glen Crocker and Mike Metcalfe controlled their game throughout, winning 3 & 2. Sadly, the overall 3-2 loss ended Wells' 2015 Somerset Bowl campaign.
Wells Ladies Invitation day was held on a sunny afternoon with the course in excellent condition. Competitors enjoyed the four ball better ball format with good scores being recorded. Sue Hockey and Glynis Slater won the nearest the pin prizes, Gill Magrath and Eileen Gillibrand were runners up with 41 points, just one point behind the winners, Tina Davies and Jackie Walker seen in the photograph being congratulated by Captain Janice White, on their win. A mixed team from Cricket St. Thomas enjoyed a good match at Wells. The Wells' pairings of Gill and Mike Magrath, and Lynda and Clive Cornish came up trumps by winning their matches in fine style against stiff opposition.
Wells Stragglers played the return match on Sunday 28/06/15 at Home to Saltford GC. Unfortunately, Saltford only had 8 players not the usual 10. A Combination of Stableford and 4BBB matches were played with Wells being the overall winner 3 points to 2.
Pascal Norman and Pete Michell Halved, John Baker and Ron Davey Won, Terry Searle and Philip Kenworthy Won 3 and 2, Gary Leigh and Bill Marcham Halved, finally Simon Elliot and Clive Cornish Lost 4 and 3.
