Seniors Club Championships

The Wells Seniors held their Championships, a 36 hole competition played over two days on 6th and 9th July. The first day saw difficult conditions and pin placements although the course was in excellent condition. A field of 53 players started off on 6th July, on the first round, which not surprisingly given the conditions yielded high scores with the lower handicap golfers dominating.

Only Mike Metcalfe played under his handicap whilst Richard Sheard had a very satisfactory 90 (nett 71). In the nett competition some good scores were recorded early in round two. The weather had changed significantly and the pin positions were kinder. The sun brought out good golf with Peter Ramsay (143 nett) and Richard Sheard ( 144 nett ) putting down early markers.

Roger Webber shot 82 (nett 68) winning the second day prize from Glen Crocker on countback. John Blench`s nett 69 got him third place on countback. The final two groups, going out in reverse first round gross score order, maintained their positions at the top of the field. Glen Crocker shot 83 + 77 (160) to take third place in the gross event. Steve Rowse hung on to his second place with 79+77 (156). The clear winner with two excellent rounds of 75 + 75 (150 ) was Mike Metcalfe, a worthy winner retaining the Senior Championship.

The Cole Cup (nett scores) was a closely contested affair which went to Alan Elkins with nett 72 + 69 giving him a 41 total. The day would not have been such a success without the selfless help and support of starters, spotters, recorders as well as the big field of players.

Wells Seniors Match v Orchardleigh

Wells Seniors travelled to Orchardleigh last Wednesday, when they met a strong team with home advantage in their favour. The match didn't start well with a loss by Ian Mills and Mike Shave, followed by Peter Leverick and David Wensley who lost a tight match on the last green. There were good halves secured by Steve Rowse with Peter Bartholomew and Steve Bocquet paired with Alan Elkins. The recovery continued with good wins for Nick Wilson and Chris Strickland (2&1), Gary Middleton and Piers Dalby (3&1). The final game went the way of Wells, when George Davis and Ron Hancock triumphed on the last to win 1up and seal the match for Wells 4 - 3.

Stragglers

Despite the weather on Sunday, Wells Stragglers enjoyed a hard fought game at Sherborne against strong opposition. Bill Levell and Phil Kenworthy had to struggle for a deserved half whereas Gary Leigh and Phil Spring found the going too tough, losing 3 & 2. John Baker and Mike Mckay also had a tough match that ebbed and flowed but they succumbed at the last to lose 1 down. Terry Searle and John Hockey suffered a succession of birdies from the strong opposition which resulted in a loss, 3 & 2. The final pairing of Ken Ford and Simon Elliott came in with a 2 up win, with Elliott producing the shot of the day with an eagle 2 on the 17th hole. However, the overall result was a 3 1/2 - 1 1/2 win for Sherborne.

Ladies Palmer Cup

Wells Ladies' Palmer Cup is played for by those ladies who won, or were runners up, in last year's qualifiers. Many good scores were recorded and consistent play from Ladies' Vice Captain, Gill Magrath put her in second place. However, with good driving and excellent putting, Sue Wells came out on top. She first had her name engraved on the trophy in 1987 and was thrilled to have won the competition again.

Bristol & District League - Wells v Saltford

Wells GC men hosted Saltford GC in the Bristol & District League on Sunday last. In dull and at times wet conditions the first match proved an exciting one. First pair out, Josh Higgs and Will Thompson, narrowly lost 3&1. However, Alan Todd and Ian Burr overcame their loss of form at Wedmore a few weeks ago to record a sound 4&3 win. Zac Cambourne and Rob Payne lost a close match, 2&1. With Nick Wilson teamed up with Pascal Norman to produce some excellent golf and pull off a resounding victory by 7&6. This left the last pair of Glen Crocker and newly crowned Seniors` Champion, Mike Metcalfe, to play out the decider. The pair performed solidly, to win 5&4 and ensure a Wells victory by 3-2.
