Portugal Coaching Trip 2016

After the success of this year's trip to Portugal with 11 members from Wells GC, I am again looking to arrange a golf coaching trip to Portugal for a week next March, the previous trip was for 5 days with 5 rounds, but after feedback from February I am looking to go for 7 days with 5/6 days golfing. The trip will include flights, transfers, a week's accommodation (half board) unlimited golf, unlimited range balls, coaching and much more. I'm looking to go around Monday 7th March - Monday 14th, this may vary by a day either way depending on flight prices, if you're interested and would like to know some more information please could you please contact via email - jackheginbothampga@gmail.com or alternatively call the professional shop on 01749 679059.

Captains Day

Captain's Day took place on Saturday in superb weather, attracting a record number of players. The event was won by Nigel Goodwin and Michael Cundill, edging out Mike Metcalfe and Pascal Norman. The ladies event was won by Glynis Slater and Kim Lord, and the junior event by Edward Higgs and Atley Stacel-Day. The popular and lucrative putting event was won by Barry Keys, but Star of the Day was Tim Taylor with a hole-in-one, a nearest the pin, a 2 spot and 4th place in the team event.

Wells Seniors V Filton

On 13th July, Wells Seniors travelled to Filton and played a match in difficult conditions with high winds and wet squally weather. An excellent performance saw Wells come out on top 3½ - 2½, with victories for Nick Carter and George White (2&1), Mike Gee and Lawrence Sokol (4&2), Gary Middleton and Ron Hancock (1up). Steve Rowse and David Flinders fought for a valuable half to secure the victory.

Wells Seniors v Sherbourne

Later the same week the Seniors hosted a visit from Sherborne. The teams were well matched and after fortunes swayed from one team to the other throughout the afternoon, the final result ended in satisfaction for both sides with a 3 - 3 draw. The Wells winners were Nick Wilson and Ken Ford (1up), Mike Gee and John Moxon (7&6), Alan Elkins and George White (2&1).

Wells Ladies Alliance v Kendleshire

At the end of June, Wells Ladies' Alliance team had an excellent away win over The Kendleshire, where the weather was good and the course in great condition. Wells took 8 points from the match with wins from Jen Jones (1up), Sue Wells (7&5), Sandy Heath (1 up) and Sue Hockey (2 up). In the return match on July 15th, with Wells enjoying the home advantage the Team, they produced their best win of the season so far, against a very strong Kendleshire team. The Wells team took a very creditable 12 of the 14 points on offer with 5 outright wins and two halved matches. Julie Kinsey and Jen Jones halved their matches, with wins for Kim Lord (3&1) Jill Bocquet (3&2) Erica Klim (5&3) Philippa Gowen (1 up) and a resounding win for Sue Wells with a forceful 7&5.

Wells Ladies Allaince v Orchardleigh

The Ladies Alliance also took a team to Orchardleigh in early July, where they faced a strong team who played well on their home course. However, the Wells team battled well and managed to take 8 points out of the total 14 points available, with wins for Julie Kinsey (2up), Glynis Slater (1up), Philippa Gowen (2&1) and Kim Lord (4&2).

The Open Sweepstake Results

After a long delayed British Open the results and Winners have been finalised!

This years winner of the Bristish Open at St Andrews was Zach Johnson and our lucky winner of the sweepstake was Phil White who won £140.

Closely following Zach Johnson in a 3 man play off was Louis Oosthuizen who was drawn with Malcom Terry who won £80.

In third place was Marc Leishman however Marc was not drawn with any of our sweepstake entries therefore the prices ended up in a tie between Jason Day and Jordan Spieth! Well done to Ian Baldwin and Chris Strickland who receive £20 each.

Congratulations to all the winners, the Prize money will be on the accounts in the Pro Shop

Pros Tip

After watching the British Open at St Andrews you can see how windy conditions can make the game hard work! In honour of Zach Johnson masterful play on Sunday this week's tip will be focused on controlling your ball flight into the wind.

When playing a golf shot straight into wind you will find the ball tends to rise up or balloon into the air causing the ball to land short or the target. The reason for this happening is because too much spin is imparted when it meets the wind. The key factor is to reduce the spin on the golf ball, this will stop the ball from rising and also reduce curvature.

To reduce the spin you will need to reduce your clubhead speed, the more clubhead speed you create the more spin is imparted on the golf ball. Therefore in simple terms the power in your golf swing.

Here is a picture attached showing Louis Oosthuizen in the wind at the British Open. If you are struggling in the wind then have a look at Louis tempo, this tempo is smooth but consistent which nearly won him the open this year!

Tip 1 - Grip

First thing we will need to do is place your hands lower down the handle (grip), by placing your hand further down the grip you shorten the swing arc reducing the amount of speed you are able to produce.

Tip 2 - Maintain Good Balance - Less Power

The second key point is to stay balanced therefore its important you only apply 70% of power. If you apply to much clubhead speed during gusty conditions this will make it difficult to maintain balance. A balanced swing will also help to promote a centered strike, as it is a lot harder to get away with a miss hit in strong winds. Remember this "in the breeze, swing with ease"

Tip 3 - Use less loft

To ensure we keep the ball down and help it to reach our target distance we need to control the trajectory of the ball, less loft on the golf club will aid a lower flight and it will travel further. However because there is less power produced in the golf swing using more club will help to create the correct distance.

I hope that give you some simple tips and helps you play in those windy conditions.
