Ladies Barlow Qualifier

The winner of the Ladies Barlow Qualifier, a Stableford game for Bronze category players, goes through to the Somerset County Meeting. This year it was held at Worlebury Golf Club and Julie Blunden represented Wells. From the beginning of her round there was a feeling she was on form, with good approach shots and careful club selection. After nine holes she had amassed 22 Stableford points and she continued this excellent form to take the Irlam Trophy as overall winner. Blunden won the Barlow Cup and also the Lovell Trophy for best score in the 29 to 35 handicap division. A great achievement, especially as it was her first open.

Ann Dyson Trophy

On Thursday 13th Aug, Wells Ladies Past Captains competed for the Ann Dyson Trophy and were pleased to finish the match without getting the soaking that had been predicted. Everyone had a very enjoyable day, particularly Sue Wells, who won the trophy for the third year in succession and was duly presented the trophy by Ian Dyson. Congratulations, Sue.

Wells Senior's

Earlier this month, Wells Seniors played a home match against Taunton & Pickeridge in fine weather which produced good scoring conditions. Wells took the initiative early on with wins in the first three games; Adrian Lawrence and Mike Gee 3&2,
Ken Ford and John Moxon 4&3,
Peter Leverick and Colin Wilde 5&3.

Taunton & Pickeridge fought back with a win against Mike Stringer and George White and a half against Nick Carter and Piers Dalby. However, Wells finished strongly with wins in the last two games from Steve Bocquet and Len Sweales 3&1 and Nick Wilson and Stuart Mann 4&3.

Overall, Wells ran out comfortable winners 5½ - 1½.

More recently, the Seniors also entertained a strong Bristol & Clifton team in overcast and rainy weather.

The poor conditions did not seem to affect the Wells' players as they stormed to a resounding victory by 6 - 1. There were wins for Nick Wilson and John Moxon 6&5: Ron Hancock and John Watson 6&5: Peter Leverick and Bill O'Callaghan 1up: Ken Ford and David Flinders 6&5: Gary Middleton and Chris Strickland 1up. The two remaining pairs of Mike Gee and George White and Bill Carruthers and Ian Mills secured Halves.

Improving your game

Fine Tune Your Putting!

Judging the pace on the greens can be difficult if your putting stroke isn't consistent. A number of golfers decelerate at impact or take the putter back to quickly and as a result can lead to inconsistent results. It's important you stroke the putter back and through smoothly maintaining the same speed throughout the transition of the stroke. As the length of the putt increases you simply lengthen the stroke without changing the speed. As you can see in the pictures below there is a coin placed on the crown of the putter. This coin is used to help promote a smoother take away and follow through during the stroke. If the take away (backswing) is too quick the coin will fall off the putter and the same result applies if the follow through is too quick.

The simple drill using a coin is great for putts inside 6ft!

You can also lay out tee pegs or use other training aids etc to make this drill more challenging.

Simply make sure the putter is travelling back and through the same distance (e.g take the putter back to 3 and through to 3)

Product of the Month - R15 Driver

The R15 is the new adjustable driver from TaylorMade.

The R15 features a lower and more forward center of gravity which promotes lower spin and a higher launch angle.

The Front Track system as you can see on the picture, is designed to act like a speed pocket similar to the AeroBurner. Not only does the Front Track system reduce spin and increase the sweet spot, it also allows you to move the weights around to tailor your particular ball flight.

For example sliding the weights to the center create maximum distance and sliding them apart to each end of the Track System Creates maximum clubhead stability.

As used by Jason Day to win the US PGA Championships R15 Driver - £329
