Wells Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Successful Pro's Day

Last Saturday, 22nd August, I hosted my first Pro's Day competition which is a new event introduced to Wells Golf Club. The competition quickly filled up with members and visitors participating in a field of 160 players. With weather warnings forecast earlier in the week it was surprising to see the sun shining for the majority of the day and luckily this helped the event to run smoothly. Callaway Golf & Titleist helped to support the event this year which meant I could produce a prize table full of outstanding prizes with items worth as much as £249!

I would like to personally thank all the competitors for supporting the event as without them it wouldn't have been possible, thank you also to our President Raymond Smith for his donated prize. After a full entry and a number of competitors on a reserve list there is a strong chance that next year's event will have an extended tee time.

The standard of golf played over the day was excellent with a large amount of scores posted above 40 points! The main prize table stretched all the way to 6th place with 4 groups scoring an impressive 45 points! However there could only be one winner so the final result was decided on countback.

Raffle

A raffle was also being held up in the clubhouse where competitors could pay £2 for a ticket to be in with a chance of winning a Callaway Tour Bag worth £250! The raffle was supported very well so I decided to add more prizes for 2nd and 3rd place including a TaylorMade Pencil Bag and a Club Crested Umbrella. Our lucky winner of the Raffle was Philip Slater! In second was James Marklew winning the pencil bag and in third Ian Nicol who wins a Club Crested Umbrella.

I would like to thank everyone who supported the event and helped me along the way. A big thanks to the family and professional staff who helped out on the day, working on the desk and the refreshments stand. Another big thanks to the Greenstaff and catering staff for all the hard work behind the scenes.

If you haven't collected your prizes yet please collect them from the Professional Shop. I hope to see you all again next year!

Competition Results & Team Reports

In its 6th and biggest year so far, the Cyder Cup hosted 68 teams from 33 golf clubs across the country. The Cup is a 36 hole Open competition, played over consecutive days on the Wells and Farrington Park courses. Good weather produced excellent scores on the two very different but challenging courses, and it was gratifying to have visitors from as far afield as Wales, Gloucestershire and Suffolk taking part in this special event. Overall winners were Steve Coles and Pete Wilcox from Farrington Park with 83 points over the two days, followed by Alex Hicks and Lee Smart from the Kendleshire and Alan and Sam Todd from Wells. There was a special moment when Jill Bocquet (pictured with the Kendleshire team) achieved her second hole-in-one.... this month.

On Saturday, Wells' Avalon Team played away at Mendip, looking for a good result to keep them in the title hunt. Unfortunately the required outcome eluded them, despite the first pair out, Simon Jackson & Will Thomson producing a 3&2 win. Apart from a half from Mike Metcalfe & Malcolm Terry, the remaining pairings of Jason Huck & Mark Western, Glen Crocker & John Baker and Ian Burr & Colin Mantle all lost. Wells now need to obtain the best possible result in their last match of the season at Long Sutton to have a chance of completing a hat-trick of promotions.

Wells GC played their final B&D league match on Sunday. Already guaranteed survival and with promotion just beyond them it was a slightly uninspiring scenario. Tracy Park GC hosted them on a day when the weather forecast was not good. The BBC , for once, proved correct and the match was played for the most part in damp conditions or at times torrential rain which took some of the enjoyment out of it.The course was very well presented and stood up to the deluges very well indeed. Will Thompson & Chris Betenson lost the first match 4&3 and Rich Connock & Dave Hayward, out second, succumbed similarly.

A new pairing of John Sellick and rookie Baden Wilkinson (who is having a real purple patch this summer) strolled to a 3&1 victory. The last pairing of Glen Crocker, newly restored to health, and Alan Todd demolished the opposition with some electric golf, winning 8&7. It was therefore down to the undefeated pairing of Pascal Norman & Nick Wilson, out fourth, to bring home the bacon. They quickly went 3 down but fought back to all square. Sadly they lost the match and their record, losing 1 down amidst much disappointment. Promotion will have to wait until 2016 for the Wells team!

The 4 hour session is free of charge and everyone is welcome to come along. Golfers can turn up and trial the demo equipment however if you would like to use the custom fitting service using flightscope you will be required to book a time slot.

For more information on booking your fitting please call 01749 679059.

Re Gripping Service

If you aren't interested in purchasing any new clubs this season why not give your clubs a new set of grips. Worn down grips can cause less friction whilst holding the club which can cause the club to slip and move during the swing.

Our re gripping service ensures you to get your clubs re gripped and back to you within 24 HOURS.

We have various grips from Golf Pride, Lamkin, Egigo and Black Widow, starting at £6.95 ranging to £10.95 per grip.

Don't let the rain spoil your game!

Be prepared for the rain this season and keep yourself dry with our fantastic range of umbrellas. Having a good quality umbrella always helps in windy conditions, especially if yours blows inside out!

In the Pro Shop we have a selection of Umbrella including Motocaddy, Callaway, PING and Club Crested!

Each umbrella has a unique design so you can keep yourself dry in style. One of the most unique designs is the Motocaddy Clearview umbrella which has a clear panel on the canopy, this helps visibility when walking.
