Jack Heginbotham Appointed a County Coach

I am delighted to have been appointed the new Somerset Golf Union U16's performance coach & excited to start on 1st November. Great stepping stone in my career to be both Head Professional at Wells & a Somerset coach.

Open 4BBB September 2015

Wells Golf Club hosted their popular Open 4-ball event on Saturday 12th September, which was played in rain and in shine. The winning team was Cath Levell and Gary Middleton from Wells, with 40 points, followed on count back by Craig Smith and Dave Taylor - also from Wells. The leading visitors' team was Mike Bowdery and Jordan McLean from Shrivenham Park. There were 9 Two Spot winners in all but the highlight of the day was Mark Western's Hole-in-One on the 7th.

1st Home Team - Gary Middleton & Cath Levell - 40 Points £70 Each
1st Visitor Team - Mike Bowdery & Jordan Mclean (Shrivenham) - 37 Points £70 Each
2nd Team - Craig Smith & Dave Taylor - 40 Points £50 Each
3rd Team - Dave Holland & Mark Western - 40 Points £40 Each
4th Team - Paul Lewer & Mark Lewer - 39 Points £30 Each

Reports

The Hobby Horse, the annual ladies versus men match, took place in perfect conditions on Sunday, 6th September. This fiercely fought battle was played in a 4BBB format where the scores were accumulated. The first men's pairing of Club Captain Steve Bocquet and Tony Smith, won their match with 38 points. The next match saw Erica Klim and Tina Davies win for the ladies with 30 points, followed by another win for the ladies pairing of Sue Wells and Sandy Heath with 41 points. Eric Loxton and Ron Hancock secured a win in their match with 31 points which meant the scores of the last pairs were crucial. The final pairing of Kathy Lane and Julie Blunden came in with 26 points clinching the trophy for the ladies by just three points.

Strong winds and rain earlier in the month were no doubt contributing factors to the disappointingly small field which contested the Wells GC Seniors` September medal. Indeed, the course and the weather beat most of the field, but there were exceptions. Gary Middleton lost third place on countback to Peter Ramsay with both of them shooting 74 nett. Glyn Hallett, obviously recovered from his bad back, shot another good round to take second place with nett 72 (gross 86). However, the clear winner , and new single figure golfer, was Dave Hayward, the Seniors` current Vice Captain, who carded an excellent 68 nett (78 gross) to win by four shots and make the difficulties on the day seem insignificant.

The Junior Club Champs are being held on Sunday 20th September with the first tee at 1pm. As the junior section evolves we feel it is important for as many of our junior members to participate with an opportunity to win, so we have created 3 competitions.

Junior Club Champion - White Tees - 18 hole - Medal - Congu or Club Handicap required - Gross/Net Score.

Junior Under 12 Club Champion - Yellow Tees - 18 hole - Stableford format - Congu or Club Handicap required - Gross/Net Score.

Junior Academy Champion - Under 18 - Blue Tees - 12 hole - Adjusted Stableford format - no handicap required - Best Score.

The entry fee is £5.

Martin will be publishing an entry sheet on Saturday, Can you please email Martin Higgs our Junior Organiser with confirmation of attendance and which competition you would like to enter by Friday.

Putting Tips

Never Up Never In!

A common fault which golfers struggle with is hitting their putts with the correct power, as a result the ball is left short of the hole which is no good! The saying "Never Up Never In" has been used repeatedly by golfers who commonly leave their putts short, however to see improvement actions must be taken to lower your putting strokes! Here is a few Tips and Drills which can be used in practice to help you lower your scores.

Tip 1 - Box Drill

No matter where you are on the green every putt should have the correct pace to travel past the hole or at the very least stay level with it. You can challenge yourself on the putting green using a simple box drill which is shown below. The main objective is to score as many points as you can with a desired target in mind.

Points are as followed :

  • In the Hole = 2 Points
  • In the Box = 1 Point
  • Outside the Box long = 0 Points
  • Leaving the putt SHORT = - 1 Points

10 Points is a good starting goal from a set of 10 Putts

Note* Be realistic with your putting distance and slope gradient!

Tip 2 - Test Your Pace Control

This drill is very simple yet very effective and is aimed to test how well you can control your putting stroke. You will need a bucket of balls and around 8ft of green to putt on. Starting from the tee pegs shown below you will putt a ball around 1ft in front of you, from here you are required to putt every ball continually past the previous ball. The aim of this drill is to see how many balls you can keep on the putting green before running onto the fringe of the green. If you fail to putt the ball past the previous ball you start again.

For further information on these drills you can contact our professional shop on 01749 679059 or for information on putting lessons speak to our professional team.

Putter Fitting

Our excellent range of putters in the professional shop means you can be fitted with the perfect putter. Each golfer has a different stroke type so finding the right model is important.

The arc of your putting stroke will depend on what type of putter type you would need, for example if your arc is pretty straight then you might see better results from a face balanced putter rather than a toe weighted putter. The weight, length and grip will also need to be considered when custom fitting so we find the correct putter for you.

We have a selection of putters in the shop including TaylorMade Ghost, Odyssey Works, Odyssey White Hot, Benross Casino putters and the latest range from PING.
