Captain's Invitation
On Saturday 10 Past Captains and their guests played in the Past Captains Invitation Day. All the competitors enjoyed themselves in all aspects of the day, weather, food and the great company. Again there was a very tight leaderboard with the results as follows:
1st - Rob Coate and Neil Falck 41 pts (won on back 9 with 21 pts), 2nd - Adrian Lawrence and his son in law Charlie Hampton 41 pts (back 9 of 20 pts) and 3rd - Phil Slater and Ray French 40 pts
Nearest the pin on the 17th: Ray French
Everybody attending agreed the Invitation is a must in our fixture list.
Ladies' Open 4BBB
This year's Wells Ladies 4BBB Open was enjoyed by a large number of visitors and home members alike, despite a wet end to the day. The winning home team from Wells (pictured with Sue Wells missing), with an excellent score of 87 stableford points were Sue Wells, Polly Williams, Jenny Davies and Sue Hockey.
The winning visitor's team was a combination of ladies from Tall Pines, Clevedon and Bristol & Clifton clubs with a creditable 81 stableford points.
The second visitor's team were also a combined team from Farrington, Wheathill and Stockwood Vale with 79 stableford points. The fourth placed team, from Wells, carding 78 stableford points, were Jenny Jones, Tina Davies, Cath Levell and Julie Blunden.
Nearest the pin on the 15th was won by Sue Rees (Thornbury) in the silver division and Gwen Cavill (Enmore) in the bronze division. Polly Williams and Linda Sage won the 2 spots.
All in all, a very successful day, well organised by Mary Harrison.
Stragglers Match V Shirehampton
Wells Stragglers were at Home to Shirehampton on Sunday 30th August. The first pairing of Pascal Norman and Pete Michel enjoyed a tight match, winning 2&1, whilst the second pairing of John Baker and Pete Bartholomew had a tough match against the Shirehampton Stragglers and Club captains, succumbing to a 2&1 defeat. Wells stalwarts John Chillington and Gary Leigh held their nerve on the last and managed a 1up win against their opponents. However, Phil Kenworthy playing with new partner Colin Mantle had an easier time winning 5&4 and John Hockey with Andrew Boatswain had an up and down match but managed to hold on for a deserved half. The overall result was a win for Wells by 3 1/2 to 1 ½.
Wells V Worlebury
On Sunday, 13 September Wells played away against Worlebury where, although the weather forecast was all doom and gloom, the sun shone all afternoon - to the benefit of Wells. The first pairing of Clive Cornish and Philip Spring fought well before losing 1 down. Second pairing out was an unusual all left handed pairing of Richard Mansfield and Gary Leigh, who despite a shaky start, stuck to their task and triumphed 2&1. John Baker and Colin Mantle dovetailed well throughout and retained their unbeaten record together, triumphing 3&1. Terry Searle and John Chillington played well and never seemed to be in trouble, eventually winning 4&3. Last out was John Hockey with Pete Bartholomew whose opposition played well below their handicaps resulting in a loss of 5&4 but still giving Wells a victory of 3 points to 2.
Wells Seniors V Weston-Super-Mare
Wells Seniors played at Home to Weston-Super-Mare and despite wet and windy conditions made a storming start by winning the first four matches; Dave Hayward and Chris Strickland 3&2, Nick Wilson and Ken Ford 5&4, Peter Leverick and Adrian Lawrence 2&1 and Ron Hancock and Piers Dalby 4&2. Although George Davis and Peter Bartholomew lost a hard fought match, the last pairing of Ken Stokes and Len Sweales secured a Half giving Wells the match by 4.5 points to1.5.
Wells Seniors V Long Sutton
Later in that week the seniors once again played at Home, this time against Long Sutton in a return to summer conditions. Wells took control of the match early on with four straight wins by Ron Hancock and Chris Strickland 2up, Dave Hayward and Glyn Hallett 5&4, Peter Leverick and Len Sweales 1up and Mike Magrath and Steve Bocquet 3&2. Long Sutton came back with a win against Colin Sellar and John Watson but Wells closed out the match with a 2&1 win for Ken Ford and George West for an overall victory of 5-1.
