Junior Club Championships

Wells Juniors recently competed in the Junior Club Championships and with fair weather and the course set up accordingly, the youngsters acquitted themselves well, producing some excellent scoring. Two titles were up for offer, the Junior Club Champion and the Under 12 Club Champion. Sam Todd, the Junior Captain secured 'back to back' victories in the overall Junior Club Championship, a superb effort, with Atley Stacey Day winning the highly competitive under 12 division. 

 

Wells Past Captains

Ten Wells Past Captains and their guests played in the Past Captain's Invitation Day, last Saturday. All enjoyed themselves, relaxing in all aspects of the day, weather, food and good company included. First home was ex Captain, Rob Coate with his guest, Neil Falck, scoring an excellent 41 points and winning on the back nine, just squeezing Past Capt. Adrian Lawrence and his guest, Charlie Hampton, into second place. Third place, with 40 points, went to Phil Slater and his guest Ray French, who also won Nearest the Pin on the 17th. It was generally agreed that the Invitation should be a must in the fixture list.

Cowern Trophy

The Cowern Trophy was played last Sunday, with the course in almost perfect condition. This is Wells Golf Club's prominent mixed event of the year, played in a Foursomes medal format. Partners are drawn and inevitably, parts of the course may be visited that might not have been seen before. Second place went to Erica Klim and Paul Hembury, just 0.5 points ahead of Sue Slade and Andy Williams, who may have had a better score if the correct ball had been played on the 18th! However, the winners with a creditable nett 70 were Janice White and Ron Johnson.'

Wells Stragglers V Minehead

On Sunday the Wells Stragglers hosted Minehead GC with a 12 man Team. Wells were 3 and 2 down after the match at Minehead, so a good win was needed to win the overall match.

Strong wins by the first 3 pairings of John Hockey and Richard Mansfield, Philip Spring and Grant Rogers, Simon Elliot and Steve Porter put the pressure on Minehead to respond. Minehead did knuckle down by winning the next 2 matches against Clive Cornish and Bernhard Young, Pete Bartholmew and Bill Marcham. Therefore, the overall match was all square with 1 pairing to win the Match for either Team. As it was a half was achieved by Rory Meek and Andrew Boatswain, so after a total of 11 matches each Team had 5.5 points. Fair result since it is Links against Parkland.
